The Best Smartphones and Gadgets for Wildlife Photography

May 20 2016
Phone photography is fast becoming the preferred medium when on vacation, and with all the latest in its gadgets, lenses and apps, it is no wonder.  It is quick, it is easy and not difficult to lug around. To improve your wildlife photographic experience, any visitor to a game reserve can also register on the Latest Sightings app (iPhone/iPad and Android) which shares real time game viewing sightings with visitors. Professional photojournalist Ilan Ossendryver says, “When buying a smartphone and the intention is for you to take good photos, make sure you select one with a relatively good camera. iPhone 6 and Samsung both have fantastic capabilities.  However some of the top rated 2016 smartphones for their cameras are as follows: iPhone 6 / 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S, LG V10, Nexus 6P, Sony Xperia Z5.

Tripod (Probably the most useful accessory
A tripod will assist you in keeping your camera phone stable, and hopefully capture that perfect shot. This is because if it is properly set up it assists in enhancing sharpness and depth of field, framing precision and extends your photographic range. There are various tutorials one can google or youtube on how to effectively use your tripod.  B&H offers a great guide on types of tripods.

Apps for editing
A great app for beginners is FX Photo Studio, and it is considered a creative powerhouse. The software comes jam-packed with filters that you often find in many other photo editing applications. Other great software that Ilan suggests for manipulating and fixing photos is photoPS Express. Photos can be snapped from the app itself, followed by quick fix solutions, adding finishing touches and quick sharing. You can post pics to your favourite social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter.

Apps for effects

Dynamic Light - allows you to manipulate the photo in the software. Dynamic Light gives you the best and most vibrant HDR-like look on any mobile platform. And this is all accomplished from just a single image using easy to use dial controls. Move the main dial to the right and you get the very same HDR look you had admired on many photographic sites.

Olloclip
This is wide-angle lens that has a magnet that clips to your smartphone. Olloclip lenses take amazing pictures with available light. If you would like to use your camera’s on-board flash, remember to first remove your olloclip lens. The olloclip is designed to fit your device perfectly; for this reason you cannot use it with screen protectors or anything that adds thickness to the device. Remotely controlling your smartphone camera can also help take better photos as it triggers your camera shutter without having to touch the camera.

Flahes
Due to onboard camera flashes having limited uses, an external flash for iOS and Android which works in photo and video mode is recommended. Due to its power it becomes an indispensible accessory. The external flashes are a must for taking smartphone photography to the next leve.
