An Unsettling Scene on the Ground

Nature enthusiast and photographer Jaco Joubert was enjoying a game drive in Malamala Game Reserve when he and his group came across a shocking sighting that few safari-goers ever witness. His footage opens with a Wahlberg’s eagle sitting on the ground with its wings outstretched and its posture alert.

Beneath its talons lay another Whalberg’s eagle, completely motionless. In the video, we hear Jaco state in disbelief that he’s “never seen this”, echoing everyone’s thoughts.

The other safari-goers in the vehicle spend the next few minutes speculating whether or not the other eagle is dead. There is no movement other than the dominant eagle holding its position and scanning its surroundings while guarding its kill.

Why Eagles Fight Their Own Kind

While shocking, encounters like this are not completely unheard of in the raptor world. Like many other animals, birds of prey can be highly territorial, especially during breeding season when competing for nesting sites or hunting grounds.

Walhberg’s eagles are migratory raptors that spend their breeding season in southern Africa. At this time, competition between eagles can escalate dramatically and may arise over mates, territory, or dominance.

While most instances of competition can be resolved through aerial displays and vocalizations, some situations can escalate into physical violence, and in rare cases such as this one, serious injury or death may occur.

A Dangerous Battle of Talons and Wings

Compared to mammals, birds are not built to absorb hard or heavy impacts, so aerial combat can be very risky, wherein small miscalculations can be fatal. In certain cases, raptors will lock their talons together mid-air, which can cause them to spiral towards the ground and potentially fail to release in time.

Many of the lethal eagle-on-eagle encounters occur during such locked talon falls. The victorious bird may survive the impact while the other succumbs to its injuries or the trauma of the fall.

Why the Eagle Remains on the Ground

In this encounter, the surviving eagle remained on the ground afterward with its wings outstretched. This posture likely served multiple purposes, including allowing the eagle to thermoregulate after intense exertion, maintain balance, and guard against opportunistic predators.

Animals like jackals and hyenas pose a significant danger to eagles that are grounded and vulnerable, so the watchful stillness of the eagle was a reflection of a predator that survived a costly confrontation and was now ensuring its safety.

Small but Fierce Raptors

Wahlberg’s eagles are not among the largest raptors in Africa, but they are formidable hunters just the same. Like other raptors, these eagles feed on small mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects, but they are known for their agility and speed rather than brute strength.

The small size of Wahlberg’s eagles makes their territorial disputes especially high-stakes, where securing prime hunting grounds can make the difference between reproductive success and failure. The extreme outcome in Jaco’s footage highlights just how intense these rivalries can become.

A Glimpse into Raptor Reality

Most wildlife encounters offer examples of predators hunting prey, so seeing a predator overcome one of its own kind is far rarer and far more unsettling. This sighting offers a glimpse into the often unseen pressures shaping the lives of raptors, where survival isn’t only about finding food, but about outcompeting rivals in an unforgiving environment.

For Jaco and those fortunate enough to witness the moment, it was a once-in-a-lifetime sighting that challenges one’s perception of birds as gentle or passive creatures.
