A Playful Moment Caught on Camera

On a sun-soaked day in MalaMala Game Reserve, field guide and wildlife photographer Deon Kelbrick captured a heart-warming sighting at the river’s edge. Two young elephant calves were found enthusiastically tussling in the sand, climbing over one another, pushing with their small trunks, and spraying sand in every direction.

Their playful energy filled the scene, creating a moment that felt light, joyful, and carefree. Just at the edge of the frame, a large elephant ear flapped into view, a subtle but reassuring sign that a protective adult, likely the calves’ mother, was standing nearby.

While the calves appear completely absorbed in their game, they are never truly alone. As a viewer, it’s hard not to smile at the cuteness and the carefree nature of the two little ones.

Play Is More Than Just Fun

Although the behaviour looks purely playful, these sand-filled sparring matches serve a crucial role in elephant development. Play is essential for young elephants, as it helps them build strength, coordination, and confidence.

Elephant calves typically begin engaging in physical play within their first few months of life, often wrestling, chasing, and mock-charging one another. These early interactions allow calves to practice movements they will rely on as adults, including pushing, bracing, and maneuvering their large bodies.

Over time, these playful exercises contribute to the impressive physical control elephants are known for.

Why Sand Makes the Perfect Playground

The sandy riverbank provides an ideal environment for young elephants to experiment safely. Soft ground cushions falls and reduces the risk of injury, allowing calves to test their balance and coordination without serious consequences.

Additionally, rolling, pushing, and climbing helps strengthen developing muscles in the legs, trunk, and neck, but sand provides more than just physical benefits. Both sand and dust play a crucial role in skin care.

Dusting helps protect elephants from sunburn, biting insects, and parasites. Even at a young age, calves instinctively engage in this behaviour, often copying older members of the herd.

Learning Social Skills

Elephants are highly social animals, living in close-knit family groups led by experienced matriarchs. Play helps calves learn how to interact appropriately with others.

Through gentle wrestling and mock competition, they begin to understand social boundaries, dominance, and cooperation, making these interactions critical for long-term social success.

Calves raised in stable groups with ample opportunities for play have a better chance navigating social relationships later in life.

A Watchful Eye Never Far Away

While the calves enjoy their playful freedom, the presence of a nearby adult highlights the strong protective instincts within elephant herds. Mothers and other females remain alert to potential threats, ensuring young calves can explore their environment safely.

This balance between freedom and protection allows calves to develop independence while still benefiting from the safety of the group.

Small Moments With Big Meaning

While this simple tumble in the sand was completely innocent, it was also a vital learning experience. The playful moment will help to shape the calve’s physical strength, social intelligence, and survival skills used throughout their lives.
