Chaos on the Roadside

Not every game drive delivers heart-pounding predator action. Sometimes, the bush offers something far more disarming.

Seasoned guide Steyn Jacobsohn was out near Crocodile Bridge in Kruger National Park when he came across an adorable scene. A group of lion cubs, completely absorbed in their own world, were playing right along the edge of the road.

It was a blustery day with the wind pushing through the bushveld, but the cubs were completely unbothered. There were roughly seven of them in total.

The group was a mix of ages ranging from tiny two-month-olds to slightly more composed cubs of around four to six months.

Together, they made for quite the spectacle…

Boundless Energy

The younger cubs, still round-bellied and unsteady on oversized paws, were the undeniable stars of the show. They tumbled over one another with reckless abandon, climbing on top of each other and biting at anything within reach.

What made the scene even more entertaining was the contrast between age groups. The slightly older cubs, a little wiser and considerably more tired, had clearly reached their limit for the day.

They sat around lazily and endured the younger ones’ relentless attacks with a resigned patience that felt almost parental. Being used as a jungle gym appeared to be today’s burden, and they bore it with quiet dignity.

This rough and tumble play lays the foundation for survival. Every pounce and bite sharpens coordination, builds strength, and teaches cubs the social boundaries they will rely on within the pride for the rest of their lives.

Mom to the Rescue

After some time, a mother emerged quietly from the bush. One look at the mayhem unfolding in front of her and it was clear she had drawn the short straw that day: babysitting duty was hers.

The effect of her arrival was instant. The cubs greeted her in a rush of spotted fluff and stumbling paws and she was met with a wave of nudges, head rubs, and the general enthusiasm that only very small lions can produce in such quantities.

She absorbed it all with the measured calm of a mother who has been through this before.

One by One, They Follow

After the greetings settled, the play resumed for a while, then the mother made her move. With a purposeful stride, she began heading off along the roadside, and what followed was one of the most endearing processions the bush has to offer.

One by one, the cubs fell into line behind her. Some trotted close at her heels, others lagged slightly, still distracted by a bug or a clump of grass, before scrambling to catch up.

It was orderly only in the loosest sense of the word, but it worked. Steyn and his guests watched as the little convoy disappeared along the road, the mother leading with quiet authority and her cubs doing their best to follow suit.

The Heart of the Pride

Moments like this are a powerful reminder that lion prides are built on bonds forged long before the hunt. The playfulness, the patience of older cubs, and the steady presence of a mother are all part of the same story.

Cubs raised in this environment, loud, social, and full of curiosity, grow into the coordinated, loyal members that make lion prides so resilient.

It is not always the dramatic sightings that stay with you. Sometimes it is just a mother, and a line of cubs doing their very best to keep up.
