An Uneasy Crossing
Marna Van Niekerk was stopped along the H14 when the elephants began to emerge. Two adults and two calves made their way across the road, one calf noticeably smaller than the other, still young enough to walk in the shadow of the adults around it.
It should have been a straightforward crossing, the kind of sighting that makes a drive unforgettable for all the right reasons. But a couple of hyenas had other ideas.
One in particular was holding its ground far closer to the herd than it had any business being. The elephants were immediately aware of it.
With their ears fanned wide and bodies squared, their posture broadcasted a single message with absolute clarity: do not try anything.
Warning Delivered
For a moment, it held as a standoff. The elephants moved with the measured tension of animals that were alert but not yet committed to action.
Then one of the adults had enough of the staring contest and let out a fierce trumpet that cut clean through the bush. The hyenas bolted down the road.
It was decisive and effective, exactly the kind of warning that should have ended things then and there. For any sensible animal, that trumpet would have been the final word on the matter.
Hyenas, however, are not always sensible. After putting some distance between themselves and the herd, they slowed, turned, and began cautiously making their way back.
Between curiosity, hunger, or sheer stubbornness, it is hard to say which was driving them. Either way, it was a mistake.
No More Warnings
The elephants had run out of patience entirely and what followed was not another warning. All four elephants moved together in a coordinated charge, ears spread wide, trunks raised, trumpeting fiercely.
There was nothing ambiguous about it. At the same moment, the rest of the herd emerged out of the bush on the right side of the road, a wall of grey emerging to reinforce the message.
The hyenas finally understood what was being asked of them and disappeared into the bush on the left without looking back.

The emergence of the rest of the herd from the bush was not a coincidence. Elephants communicate constantly, and the rest of the group had been monitoring the situation the entire time, ready to act the moment they were needed.

What Marna captured on the H14 is a vivid reminder of just how tightly knit elephant herds really are. The defence of that small calf was never going to be left to chance.
From the first flared ear to the final charge, every elephant in that group played its part. The hyenas never stood a chance, and deep down, they probably knew it all along.
