Lions in Unusual Territory
In a scene filmed by former game ranger Mike Kirkman at MalaMala Game Reserve, two lionesses are seen perched on a low tree branch. Mike noticed this was unusual for animals more commonly found lounging on the ground and decided to capture the moment.

While leopards or cheetahs use height to scan the terrain for prey or threats, it’s not completely unheard of for lions to climb trees, especially cubs. Being up high can serve as a better vantage point, a place to catch a cooler breeze and escape biting insects, or even just a place to rest.

Mike mentions, “This is normally like a leopard or a cheetah tactic… to climb up a fallen tree or a termite mound or something to look for [prey or danger].” It seems these lionesses were experimenting with elevation, though not with the same finesse as their spotted cousins.
One Wrong Step
As the two lionesses get comfortable on the branch, one appears especially relaxed and eventually decides to lie down. The two lionesses lounge about for several more minutes, nonchalantly scanning their environment, before something unexpected happens.

The lioness laying down attempts to rise again but quickly loses her balance! With an awkward scramble and a sudden slip, she tumbles right off the branch to the ground below, giving Mike, and viewers, a good laugh.

Her companion, startled by the fall, freezes momentarily and stares down with wide eyes. Then, she carefully and elegantly makes a descent of her own to join her embarrassed friend on the ground.
The contrast between the ungraceful fall and the careful dismount adds a comical layer to the whole moment.

The True Treetop Masters
Leopards are true climbers. Unlike lions, whose large size and bulk make climbing a challenge, leopards are built for life in the trees.

Their powerful limbs, retractable claws, and exceptional balance allow them to scale trunks with ease and navigate branches gracefully. They often drag their kills into trees to keep them safe from scavengers like hyenas and lions, demonstrating both strength and strategy.

Trees offer leopards a place to rest, scout for prey, and stay out of sight. Watching a leopard leap effortlessly from branch to branch is a stunning display of agility and wild elegance.

The Lighter Side of the Wild
Although lions are often depicted as powerful and fearsome, this video is a lighthearted reminder that even the kings and queens of the savannah can have clumsy moments. Lions don’t have the same tree-climbing agility as leopards, and their build makes balance more difficult.
Still, curiosity and the occasional desire for elevation can tempt them into tricky spots. It’s moments like these, unexpected and unscripted, that show the playful and sometimes awkward nature of wild animals!

Not every day in the bush is life-or-death. Sometimes, it’s just a lion misjudging a branch.
Even the fiercest predators aren’t immune to a little embarrassment, and those fleeting, funny moments are part of what makes wildlife watching so magical!
