Leopards employ stealthy ambush hunting techniques. However, as this video shows, even perfect preparation does not guarantee success.
Deon Kelbrick submitted this footage to Latest Sightings. He filmed it on the banks of the Sand River, in South Africa’s Mala Mala Reserve.

Down for a drink
The video begins with a seemingly tranquil scene. On the banks of the Sand River, a small herd of impalas has arrived to quench their thirst.

However, it is at times like this that prey species are most at risk from predators. Realising that their prey must drink, predators often lie in ambush near water.

Accordingly, the antelopes are vigilant, with some drinking while others keep watch. With the tension high, some flee at the slightest provocation. When nothing happens, the herd settles once again.
Err on the side of caution
A few moments later, the anxious animals again scatter. But, is it another false alarm?

For the impalas, running for no reason is better than risking being caught by a predator. However, on this occasion, their panic is justified.
Explodes from cover
As the herd scatters, a spotted shape explodes from cover. As Deon alerts his guests, a male leopard streaks down the embankment towards the impalas.

Leopards are ambush hunters that lie patiently in wait until such time as prey comes within striking distance. However, they have limited endurance for the chase, so timing is everything.

Initially, the leopard aims for a group of ewes running to the right. He is closing in fast, and it looks like he will be successful.

Indecisive
However, at the last moment, he spots a ram that has been slow to respond. Accordingly, he changes direction.

This moment will prove to be a costly mistake for the leopard. As the ewes escape, the ram finally gathers his wits and springs into action.

What happens next is very strange. Instead of continuing his pursuit, the leopard suddenly stops. Evidently, the cat had decided the ram was no longer a viable target.

Left for dust
Subsequently, a cloud of its own dust envelopes the leopard. As the impalas disappear to the left and the right, the leopard seems at a loss.

After looking to both sides, the puzzled predator finally decides to go after the ram.

However, it is far too late. With their alarm calls echoing across the riverbed, the antelope are long gone by the time he sets off.

On the other hand, the leopard might be so embarrassed by his blunder that he wants to disaapper from view as soon as possible.

As Deon’s video ends, the cat heads back towards cover. Hopefully next time he won’t confuse himself so easily.
