Drama in the River

Berg-En-Dal Rest Camp sits along the edge of the Crocodile River, a stretch of water that earns its name every single day. Willie Heystek was watching from the bank with his safari group when a dramatic scene unfolded.

A baby waterbuck was thrashing through the water with everything it had. Right behind it, a crocodile surged forward and drove its head down onto the calf, forcing it beneath the surface with a sickening force.

The calf re-emerged and the croc attacked again and again. Each time the little animal popped back up, gasping, kicking, and refusing to give in.

The Fight That Should Have Been Over

What makes the footage so remarkable is that the crocodile was not holding back. At several points it snapped its jaws directly around the calf’s head, the kind of grip that should end things immediately.

And yet, the waterbuck kept coming back up, legs still churning and pushing towards the bank where its mother stood watching from the shore, visibly frantic. In the safari vehicle, everyone encouraged the little buck to keep going, willing it on with every resurface.

It’s impossible to watch the scene unfold without getting completely swept up in it.

An Unexpected Ally

Then the camera pans, and everything changes. Moving through the water with slow, unmistakable authority was a hippo, heading directly towards the crocodile.

It didn’t rush because it didn’t need to. Its presence alone carried enough weight to rewrite the entire situation.

The crocodile took one look and backed off, and just like that, the hunt was over! The calf was exhausted but somehow still in one piece.

It scrambled onto the bank and ran to its mother. The vehicle erupted in cheers and clapping, the kind of uninhibited joy that only comes from watching something survive against every odd stacked against it.

Why Hippos Intervene

Hippos are fiercely territorial over the water they occupy, and crocodiles operate largely at their mercy within that space. While hippos are not natural protectors of other species, their intolerance for disturbance and their dominance over crocodiles can occasionally produce moments that look a lot like intervention.

Whether this hippo acted out of aggression toward the crocodile or simply moved through at the right moment, the result was the same. The calf lived.

Waterbuck calves are particularly vulnerable in their first weeks of life, and river crossings represent one of the highest-risk moments they will ever face. Crocodiles are patient, opportunistic, and exceptionally powerful, making any escape from their jaws a genuine rarity.

Against All Odds

By any measure, that calf should not have made it. The crocodile had it in its jaws more than once, in open water, with no help in sight.

The fact that it fought its way free, reached the bank, and walked away without serious injury is the kind of outcome that feels almost impossible. And yet, Willie’s footage captures every second of it.

For everyone in that vehicle, it was the sighting of a lifetime, proof that even in the most unforgiving corners of the wild, survival sometimes wins.
