This memorable sighting was a reminder of the sheer strength inherent in a lion’s jaws. It was also a brutal reminder of the harsh realities of the wild, where one species often loses its life to feed another.

Lionesses stands with kill in her jaws

This incredible sighting told the unspoken story of the hunt that had preceded it.

Warthogs are alert, quick-footed animals, capable of short bursts of speed up to 55km/h. They rely on keen eyesight and an instinct to bolt towards their burrows when danger appears.

Catching one requires stealth, patience, and explosive power.

This pride had managed to bring the warthog to the ground, stalking it through the long grass and shrubs before launching an ambush.

With their hunting attempts successful, they had settled down to feed. However, one of the lionesses soon stood up, holding the warthog kill in her jaws. She was looked for a better place to settle down with the pride to feed on the kill. Perhaps the location they had found was not covered enough for her liking.

She emerged from the long grass, a tawny figure, moving with a purposeful, almost regal gait. Clamped firmly in her powerful jaws was the unmistakable shape of the warthog. Its legs hung limply as she walked along.

She carried the lifeless warthog as though it weighed nothing. However, an adult warthog can easily weigh between 50 and 100kg!

Her muscular shoulders rolled beneath her coat with each step, in a display of strength. If a male lion is the King of the Jungle, this was definitely a Queen!

The warthog’s stocky build and sharp tusks make it a dangerous prey item, capable of injuring a predator in a desperate fight. However, this warthog had lost the battle.

Now, it was nothing more than sustenance for the lioness and the pride. For lions, a kill like this represents a critical calorie source. An adult lioness can consume up to 7kg of meat in a single sitting.

Lions will often bring prey to a safer location before feeding. This is was this one was doing.

Lioness maintains focus as she carries warthog carcass

Carrying an entire carcass is no easy feat, but her powerful jaw muscles made it possible.

As she moved, she maintained focus. In the wild, a kill is never truly private. Scavengers often appear within minutes, and even another predator such as a leopard or hyena might try to steal the prize if the opportunity arises.

For this reason, she kept her pace steady but direct, heading toward the safety of a shaded thicket.

Lioness succeeds in carrying kill to shaded area

As the lioness reached the shade, she paused, adjusting her grip on the carcass. The warthog’s coarse bristles and sturdy hide were still intact. She set it down for a moment, scanning her surroundings, ears swiveling to catch the faintest sound.

Satisfied that no threat was close by, she picked it up again and disappeared into the thicker cover.

It was a moment of victory for the lioness and her pride, and the result of skill and strength. However, it was also a moment of loss for the warthog, whose life has ended to feed another.
