In the wake of the floods earlier this year, Kruger is bursting with life. What better way to celebrate this than this video of lion cubs following their mom.
This happy video was submitted to Latest Sightings by the Kruger Crew. They filmed it on the S119 road while visiting South Africa’s Kruger National Park.
Life in abundance
In January this year, Kruger National Park was hit by the worst floods in recent memory. Despite the widespread destruction, Nature has been busily restoring itself.
This is evident in the lush vegetation, abundant water, and proliferation of life that continues to thrive in this extensive ecosystem. In this video, the sight of a mother lion leading her cubs symbolises the renewal that is under way.
As the video begins, we see the lioness approaching, accompanied by her three tiny cubs.

In good health
In immaculate condition, Mom appears to be a young lioness. And, judging by their energetic behaviour, the cubs are in good health, too.
Lionesses typically start breeding at around four years old. After conceiving, they have a gestation period of roughly 110 days.
Born in seclusion
When it is time to give birth, the female seeks out a secluded den site. There, she gives birth to a litter of up to 4 helpless cubs.
Over the next 4 to 8 weeks, she will barely leave their side, except to hunt and drink nearby. At this vulnerable time in the cubs’ lives, she is their sole protector and provider.
On the move
Fed on a diet of protein-rich milk, the cubs develop quickly. To minimize the risk of detection by predators, the mother moves her litter to a new den site every week or so.
Consequently, this may be what the Kruger Crew witnessed at this sighting. Alternatively, she may be leading them to meet the rest of the pride for the first time.

A loving family
As the cubs scamper after Mom, they appear bold and curious. However, their introduction to other members of the pride is sometimes a nerve-wracking affair.
However, after a nervous couple of days, both the adults and the cubs accept one another as their own. Lions are known to form incredibly close social bonds, sometimes lasting their entire lifetime.
Long road ahead
Consequently, there is every reason to be hopeful that these lions will go on to make their contribution to the ecosystem’s health. However, the road ahead has many challenges in an often unforgiving environment.
In just a couple of years, they will be the top apex predators, cooperatively bringing down a variety of prey. Seeing them at this age, it is hard to imagine.
