The successful hunt was witnessed by Francis Kijazi, who had spied the lioness and other members of her pride before the zebra became aware of their presence.
Recognising the significance of the moment, Francis had his camera waiting and ready to capture the memorable action.

Zebra feeds peacefully, oblivious to any signs of danger
The zebra had been feeding quite nonchalantly out in an open area, with little shrubbery or bushes. An expansive plain of grass and sand stretched out around him, as he fed peacefully, seemingly without a care in the world.
The zebra was isolated from his herd and was vulnerable as he lowered his head to graze.

Lioness fixes attention on zebra
Francis became aware of lions in the vicinity. It was for this reason, he began to film, anticipating action.
In spite of there being little coverage in terms of foliage, the lions were well camouflaged. One of them lay down, catching some necessary rest. The other was alert, with her head up and her attention focused on the zebra.

Lioness stalks towards zebra
The lioness stood up without warning and started to walk slowly towards the grazing animal. She was magnificent in form, and each of her moves was calculated and determined.
She crouched down as she walked, stalking her desired prey with a focused gaze. The zebra remained oblivious to her presence. Francis, however, was filming every moment.

As she neared the zebra, she started to pick up pace. It was only when she was practically on top of the feeding animal that he tried to get away, visibly surprised.

The lioness leapt onto his back and he left out cries of distress. Lions will often attempt to immobilise their prey by targeting its hindquartres first. This lioness clung to the zebra, even as he bucked and retaliated, trying to get her to lose her grip and fall to the ground. However, she clung to him with all her might and refused to let go.

Zebra pulled to the ground in successful hunting conquest
She eventually succeeded in pulling the zebra down. With him immobilised, she was able to go for the throat area to secure the kill. It was an incredible moment, showcasing the hunting skill and strategy of one of South Africa’s best-known predators.
Lions are ambush predators that rely on stealth, teamwork, and explosive bursts of speed. A lion can reach speeds of around 80km/h in short bursts, but only for a few seconds, so the element of surprise is critical.
Zebras, however, are far from helpless. They can run at speeds of up to 65km/h and have powerful kicks capable of breaking a lion’s jaw or skull.
Zebras rely heavily on herd behaviour for survival. When a lion attacks, zebras often scatter, zigzag, or bunch together to create confusion. They also use sharp eyesight and hearing to detect danger early, often relying on other species like wildebeest to help spot predators.
This lion, however, managed to catch the zebra completely by surprise. A successful hunt requires precise timing, and this is exactly what the lioness had to her advantage.
It was also what Francis had to his advantage! He had his camera out in time and captured the memorable moment for others to witness on Latest Sightings.
