In the dry wilderness of the Greater Kruger, field guide and photographer Alison Drake captured a remarkable standoff between rival predators. A lone lioness crouched beside a carcass, her golden coat blending seamlessly with the tall grass.
A few meters away stood about a dozen hyenas, circling her with growing boldness. Yet, what stood out most was not the lioness’s size or strength, but her composure.
Even as the air filled with the haunting calls of the encroaching clan, she barely flicked an ear.
Hyena Strategy in Motion
Hyenas are master tacticians, relying on teamwork and persistence rather than brute force. Their whoops, laughs, and cackles are not random noises, but rather serve as rallying calls to coordinate movements and test their opponent’s boldness.

The brief eruption of chaos gave way once more to silence as the lioness lay proprietarily over the carcass, and the hyenas watched resentfully from a distance. The message was clear: this lioness was not to be messed with.
The Balance of Power
Encounters like this highlight the complex relationship between lions and hyenas, eternal competitors in Africa’s ecosystems. While lions often dominate in one-on-one confrontations, hyenas’ strength lies in numbers, strategy, and endurance.
Both species play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance: lions keep herbivore populations in check, while hyenas act as nature’s clean-up crew, ensuring no part of a carcass goes to waste. Their rivalry, though fierce, is essential to the rhythm of the savanna.
