Martial eagle secures prey with talons
Sighting the lizard from the air, the eagle swooped down to secure its prey.
Its grip helps prevented the lizard from escaping while it prepared to feed.

The martial eagle has a wingspan which can reach around 2,6 metres. Despite its impressive size, it is an accomplished and highly adaptable hunter.
It spends much of its time scanning the landscape from elevated perches or while soaring overhead, using its exceptional eyesight to locate potential prey below.
For this lizard, the encounter must’ve unfold incredibly quickly. A martial eagle can descend with remarkable speed and accuracy, extending its legs and powerful feet as it approaches its target.

The varied diet of the martial eagle
With the lizard in its grip, the martial eagle used its considerable weight and strength to continue to pin it down.
The sight of such a large bird tackling a comparatively small reptile was an illustration of how varied the martial eagle’s diet can be.
Although the martial eagle is capable of hunting substantial prey, it does not need to target large animals on every occasion.

The hooked tip helps the eagle grip and tear meat efficiently, while its muscular jaw gives it the strength needed to handle tough prey.
For this lizard caught beneath its talons, the eagle’s formidable beak quickly turned a successful hunt into a meal.

For Frank, the sight of the eagle pinning down the lizard was a striking reminder of the power and precision found in the bushveld. This eagle showed incredible strength and focus. It was a honed hunting machine.
For the lizard, the encounter highlighted the unforgiving reality of life in the wild.
Life in the bushveld isn’t always predictable.
