Just as mankind has conquered mountains and other high places, this little millipede decided one day that it was going to climb a lion. Such a task seems like a strange one for a millipede to give itself, but that’s neither here nor there.

Nic Nel spotted this arthropod undertaking its quest at the MalaMala Game Reserve, and sent the footage through to Latest Sightings. It was an ambitious plan, especially when the lions seemed a little squeamish, but would it succeed?

To Boldly Go Where No Millipede Has Gone Before

The lion was just sitting there and minding its own business when the sneaky little millipede made a break for its tail. Its ultimate goal was a mystery as the lion dwarfed it completely in size.

Curiously, the lion looked at the millipede, probably wondering what on earth such a small creature was planning to do with its tail. The big cat idly twitched its tail out of the way each time the arthropod got close, making its job harder each time.

The lion even got up and moved out of the way eventually, so the millipede was alone on the ground and casting about for a target, but it was a determined little creature, and it just continued moving its many legs on the path to the next big cat.

Curious Cats

Confronted by such a small and strange creature, the lions had no idea what to do with it. They were larger than cubs but not quite fully grown adults by the size of them, and their sense of childlike curiosity was clearly fully intact judging by their reaction to the millipede.

First two lions crouched down to look at it, and then a third joined them, all of the felines watching the tiny intruder as it finally decided to give up on its dream of climbing a lion’s tail, and tried to just continue on its way out of their territory.

It was unclear what, if anything, the lions were thinking about. None of them were being threatening or aggressive towards the millipede, and instead they all showed peaceful curiosity as it scuttled along between them.

The Dream Reborn

While they might have been curious about it, the lions weren’t interested enough in the millipede that they would have gotten up and followed it once it got beyond their sight.

At least, they weren’t that interested until it turned and made a beeline for one of them. This lion appeared to have already lost interest in the arthropod and forgotten it was there.

One Last Chance

For a short moment it looked as though the millipede was going to climb the lion’s foot, but then one of the other big cats suddenly took an interest in it again and the chance was lost.

The lion climbed to its feet and moved to a safe distance away where it had a good view of the millipede, so that it wouldn’t be able to stealthily sneak up again, and now the millipede’s dream of climbing a lion had properly come to an end.
