Ellen Clark was on a game drive with her family in Kruger National Park when they stumbled upon a pack of African wild dogs. They stopped for a while to watch the pack finish off what must have been a warthog from a recent hunt.
The scene of the pack eating together warmed Ellen’s family’s hearts, but in the wild, peace never lasts for long.
A Predator in the Shadows
While everyone’s eyes were fixed to the left of the vehicle where the dogs were eating, Ellen noticed movement to the right of the vehicle. She shockingly discovered a lioness who had been silently stalking the pack.
The lioness crept closer, now only a few meters away from the dogs and well hidden by the shadow of the vehicle and the tall grass. Ellen and her family held their breath — would the pack notice the danger before it was too late?
Swift and Savage
The wild dogs ate their meal, remaining entirely oblivious to the proximity of the lioness. With the dogs distracted, the lioness sprang into action.
She targeted one unlucky dog in the centre of the group and grabbed it with her claws. As she pinned the dog to the ground, the rest of the pack encircled her, yipping in distress.
Ellen’s daughter began to cry at the raw brutality of the scene unfolding in front of them. Amidst the chaos, however, Ellen noticed something remarkable — the dog’s tail was still wagging.
A Daring Deception
The lioness picked her victim up by its scruff and began to walk away. Firmly in the jaws of the lioness, the wild dog hatched a cunning plan in an act of pure survival instinct — it went limp, feigning death.

Confident in her catch, the lioness let her guard down and dropped her prize. This brief moment was all the time the dog needed, it took the opportunity to make a run for its pack.
As the dog bolted away in a last-ditch attempt at survival, the lioness gave chase.
Pack Power Saves the Day
Just before the lioness could reclaim her prize, the rest of the pack swooped in to save the day. A handful of dogs chased the lioness, distracting her while the original dog escaped into the safety of the pack.
With their pack member was safely returned, the wild dogs decided to teach the lioness a lesson. They spent the next several minutes antagonizing her with yips, lunges and chases, forbidding her from leaving the scene.
Outnumbered and outmaneuvered, the lioness was forced to slowly retreat from the pack.
An Unforgettable Encounter
Ellen and her family were left speechless at the scene that had just unfolded in front of them. “It was exhilarating to see the dog get away and be part of this unforgettable moment.”
