Watch The Sighting:
Fransie Booysen was enjoying a full-day safari in Kruger National Park, spotting a variety of common wildlife and taking in the sights before her day took an emotional turn. Her group was driving down the H14 late in the afternoon when they came across an upsetting sight.
A Heart-Wrenching Scene
An old and emaciated leopard was splayed out on the side of the road, panting heavily and visibly distressed. Weakness rarely goes unnoticed in the wild, and this poor leopard learned that lesson the hard way.

A clan of hyenas, being both skilled scavengers and opportunistic predators, was immediately drawn to the scene. They began to torment the leopard, antagonizing it to test its limits and responses.
The hyenas took turns biting, cackling, and lunging at the feeble cat, who was too weak to defend itself. It lay on the ground, exhausted and panting in pain, while the hyenas continued to bully it relentlessly.

Occasionally, the leopard would growl at the hyenas to try to scare them away, but these hyenas were determined and didn’t seem too bothered by the leopard’s occasional retaliation.
Fransie described how disturbed she was to witness nature’s cruelty: “As the sighting started playing itself out, I was terrified, as this was so disturbing and cruel. I couldn’t help but be in tears, however, I know that this is the way of nature.”

The Leopard’s Inevitable Fate
After some time, the hyenas decided to take a break from harassing the poor leopard and gave it some space for a few moments. The leopard took the opportunity to try and escape, but was in such bad form that it could barely get up.
In a pitiful attempt, it made its way over to a nearby culvert, dragging its injured back leg and gasping for breath. The hyenas watched in anticipation, almost as if their dinner was walking into the oven.

Finally, the leopard struggled into the culvert and out of the safari group’s view. A few moments later, the hyenas pursued the leopard, and while nobody could see what unfolded, everyone knew that this leopard’s fate was sealed.
An Encounter Like No Other Leaves Lasting Emotions
This sighting is a stark reminder of the raw and unfiltered brutality of the wild. Nature is not always kind, and even the fiercest creatures are not exempt from its unforgiving rules.

Fransie’s advice to safari-goers who may witness similar situations is to “always take in the greatness of the surroundings, no matter how hard they might be to handle”.
How Solitary Life Can Be a Weakness
Leopards are solitary animals that use their stealth and agility to survive in the wild. They hunt, rest, and defend themselves alone, unlike lions, who rely on the strength of their pride.

This independence is a strength for healthy leopards, allowing them to avoid unnecessary conflicts and hunt without competition. However, when injured, a solitary lifestyle often becomes a weakness.

With no pride members to protect or assist it, an injured leopard is left vulnerable to scavengers and opportunistic predators like hyenas. In the wild, weakness is often a death sentence, and without the ability to defend itself, a solitary leopard can quickly become a target.
