Every person and animal needs somewhere to rest their head at the end of a long day, whether that’s a house, a burrow or a handy nest. The need for shelter is one which can drive animals to violence against each other.

This footage was taken in High Island, Texas, and send in to Latest Sightings by Judy Lehmberg. With important things on the line like shelter, mating, and survival itself, this squabble for room can escalate quickly into a fight.

A Scarcity Of Spots

When it reaches nesting time for the roseate spoonbill, it’s a strong case of the early bird gets the worm. Limited nesting space in the trees means that those spoonbills that get in early get the good spots, while the others fight for the remaining room.

The latecomers in this footage must have regretted their tardiness in securing space in the tree as they squabbled in the lower branches, using their large bills as their main weapons against each other.

Some other birds watched from the ground, perhaps waiting for an opportunity to lay their own claim on the branches, or maybe individuals that had already taken their place in other trees, and they were just there to watch the drama unfold.

Fight For The Right

For most animals living in the wild, two of the biggest drivers of behavior are the need to eat, and the need to mate. These both cause animals to act territorial, to nest, to migrate.

The lack of space isn’t something one of these spoonbills can tolerate without challenging each other for the chance to build their own nests among the branches. Having room to nest could make the difference in raising young, and ensuring the survival of the species.

Despite having the advantage of height, the bird nestled already in the branches was unable to fully vanquish its opponent. Locked in a stalemate, both birds were trying to catch each other’s bill in their own and use the leverage to dislodge the other.

Establishing Dominance

What started as a challenge evolved into a significant battle, as three birds found themselves in fierce competition for the opportunity to nest in a single tree. The crowd of birds were either busy with their own affairs, or watching the confrontation escalate.

The bird that was higher in the tree was presumably the bird that had arrived first, and was defending its territory against challengers that liked the look of the branches. One of the other spoonbills was the primary challenger while another made only a halfhearted attempt.

Large flapping wings and angry pecks characterized the battle as the higher spoonbill emerged as a the strongest of the three. Jabs with its powerful neck were enough to keep the challengers at bay for the beginning of the fight.

Closing The Gap

After less than a minute, one challenger, annoyed at being unable to reach its opponent, launched itself further into the tree in an attempt to dislodge the defending spoonbill, and claim the branch for its own.

The chaotic melee that ensued saw one spoonbill sandwiched between the other two, desperately defending itself against attacks from above and below, but remaining steadfast and refusing to give up its spot.

The stalemate was maintained until the end of the footage, as all three birds appeared to think they had a chance in claiming the nesting area. The victor in this battle remains unknown.
