Some traffic blocks are welcomed more than others. When its three male lions causing the traffic jam, you don’t mind having to wait a little while.
Sheila Grobbelaar filmed the entire spectacle near the H1-3 Nwanetsi Bridge in the Kruger National Park. And it was exactly that, a spectacle! Rows of cars were backed up in the road as the three majestic creatures strutted their stuff oblivious to the traffic chaos they were causing.
They walked with determination across their territory, carrying all the authority as King Of The Jungle. Sheila explained the reason for their determined steps to Latest Sightings.

Male lions stand to approach distant roar
She explained how it all began: “We were watching the famous white lion, Casper’s, brothers napping one morning, when all of a sudden we heard a lion roar in the distance.”
She said this resulted in the three male lions immediately reacting, getting up and moving towards the roaring lion.

These lions were so fixated on locating the source of the roar that they didn’t mind the cars so much… and there were many of them.
“Shortly after they got up they started roaring, the most incredible sound in the bush. We moved forward to witness Casper appear out of the thickets and ultimately join his coalition.”

They walked along, this brotherhood of lions, presenting a formidable front. Their presence was made all the more awesome by the roars which they gave out.
The coalition meant business and it was evident that they felt they ruled the bushveld. The cars were in their space. Not the other way around.

A coalition offers significant advantages. By working together, male lions are better equipped to defend a territory, take over a pride, and protect valuable resources such as water and prey.
Larger coalitions generally have greater success than solitary males, often holding territories for several years. However, every member must contribute when confronting rival lions or defending cubs from invading males.

Male lions strut their stuff
The male lions continued to walk down the road; the celebrities of the hour.
Roads are popular travel routes for lions because they provide the path of least resistance. Instead of pushing through dense grass or thorny bush, lions can cover long distances while conserving energy.
Researchers have also observed that roads allow lions to patrol territorial boundaries more efficiently, especially during the cool evening and early morning hours when they are most active.

Seeing three male lions walking shoulder to shoulder highlights the strong social bonds within a coalition. Coalition members groom one another, rest together, and communicate using deep roars which can travel up to 8 kilometres under the right conditions.
These vocalisations help advertise their presence and warn rival males to stay away.
There were many things which were impressive about the brothers as they moved with majesty down the road; however, what most impressed the game viewers was their roars.
