Watch The Sighting:
On a sunny day in Kruger National Park, safari-goer Kristie came across an extraordinary sighting while driving down one of the park’s dirt trails. Two black mambas were deeply engaged in combat directly in front of her on the sun-baked road!
Kristie knew this was a rare sighting that most safari-goers only hear about, so she took out her camera to capture the action.

Caught In A Coil
The slithering bodies wrapped around each other in a silent struggle, each trying to overpower the other without delivering a single venomous bite! Kristie watched in amazement as the snakes took turns trying to gain the upper hand, but it seemed the two males were well-matched.
The fight went on for quite some time, with neither snake seeming to grow tired. Unlike many animals that fight with teeth or claws, black mambas must use their strong bodies in a battle of endurance to tire their adversary out over time.

After watching the sighting for a while, Kristie knew that there would be no clear victor any time soon and decided to move on.
Africa’s Most Feared Snake
The black mamba has earned its title as Africa’s deadliest snake because of its speed, strong venom, and aggressive defense. Yet, sightings like Kristie’s are a reminder that they have complex behaviour just like every other animal.

Black mambas earned their name not through the colour of their bodies, but through the black inside of their mouths, which they display when threatened. These snakes are integral to the savannah ecosystem as they help control populations of rodents and other small animals.
Why The Fight?
Snakes are solitary animals, but during mating season (spring to early summer in South Africa), they come together under tense circumstances. These two males were likely battling over a nearby receptive female whose scent would have been picked up in the surrounding area.

The winner of the non-venomous fight earns mating rights, while the loser has to slink away and try his luck elsewhere.
Techniques Of A Champion
During the duels for dominance, male black mambas attempt to pin their rival’s head to the ground using body pressure to force their submission. This physical contest can last minutes to hours, depending on the strength and stamina of each snake.

Venom is not used in these battles because the goal isn’t injury, but rather a show of strength. Those who have been lucky to observe these fights often describe them as a dance, with graceful yet powerful movements that are mesmerizing and eerie to watch.
Respect The Road
Roads cutting through wild areas often become surprising stages for animal drama. For these mambas, the warmth of the gravel likely drew them out of hiding, turning the road into an arena.

This sighting is a reminder to keep your eyes on the road at all times! Not just for traffic, but for wildlife too!
Nature doesn’t follow signs, and incredible moments like this mamba duel can unfold directly in your path!
