This shocking encounter was captured by safari-goer Ros while he was out on a game drive near Mopani in Kruger National Park. Tensions were high when the group arrived at the site.
An elephant was agitated and on edge, displaying typical signs of aggression, including flapping its ears wide, holding its head and tail high, and vocalizing.
An Unstoppable Force
Ros soon noticed a buffalo already lying on the ground, likely from a previous tussle with the angered elephant. Instead of leaving it alone, however, the elephant decided to make an example of a nearby buffalo.
As the buffalo struggled to stand and began to limp away, the elephant unexpectedly charged once more! Despite its sturdy build, the buffalo was no match for the sheer size of the elephant and its sharp tusks.
Effortlessly, the elephant scooped up the buffalo with its tusks and sent it tumbling, earning a gasp from everyone in the vehicle. Then it lowered its massive head and used its tusks like lethal spears, ramming into the buffalo with incredible force.
It lifted the struggling buffalo off the ground before slamming it back down once more.
The Fatal Blow
The buffalo tried to resist, kicking out in distress, but the elephant’s relentless assault left little hope for survival. It struck over and over again, each stab leaving deep, devastating wounds.
Finally, with one last blow, the buffalo seemed to be dead, and the elephant backed away, still flapping its ears angrily.
It was devastating for Ros and his group to watch the buffalo remain utterly defenceless against the wrath of its attacker. On the other hand, it was impressive to observe the sheer power of the elephant in all its fury.
Elephant Aggression Explained
Even though elephants are typically perceived as gentle giants, they can become dangerous and aggressive just like any wild animal, given certain circumstances. Male (bull) elephants experience a surge of testosterone that can make them highly unpredictable and aggressive during a phase known as musth.
Female elephants can also be just as hostile while defending their young. Sometimes, even stressful situations such as drought, habitat loss, human encroachment, or competition for resources can cause elephants to behave aggressively.
