A huge warthog recently put up an incredible fight against a determined leopard at the Sabi Sand game reserve, with Stephanie McClendon, sales manager for the Luxury Travel Company (Scott Dunn), witnessing what has to be one of the most spectacular warthog triumphs captured on film.

The massive creature refused to be prey as its dragged the leopard towards its burrow home, eventually forcing the determined leopard to give up on its efforts.

The big fellow created some memorable viewing, even after Stephanie and those travelling with her had believed that due to the rainy weather they would probably spot nothing in the reserve that day.

Search for lions ends with spectacular sighting

Stephanie explained the day was overcast with thunderclouds, and there had been light rain as they had set out on their game drive.

She said they hadn’t expected to see much because of the weather, however, their guide had found some lion’s tracks which had been made evident by the light drizzle. He was busy tracking the lions, when he brought the vehicle to abrupt halt.

Warthog refuses to give up

The guide explained it wasn’t lions he had spotted, but a leopard. “We all got super excited!” says Stephanie,

However, not everyone was as excited about the leopard as Stephanie and the passengers in the game vehicle. A large warthog was with the leopard, and the two animals were engaged in an unusual wrestling match.

The massive warthog was being held by his throat by the leopard, and it seems the leopard was having difficulty doing much with the colossal animal. Adult warthogs can weigh over 300 pounds and this was a hefty fellow!

The warthog’s sounds of agony could be heard as it edged its way towards its burrow, which was around 2metres away, hoping to make it home before the leopard managed to succeed in its deadly mission.

Says Stephanie: “It knew that the best thing to do would be to get back home to its burrow. The leopard, on the other hand, was using all its power to keep the warthog from getting there.”

The video clip sent by Stephanie shows the persistence and strength of the warthog. The creature stood his ground, while the leopard exerted every effort to move the colossal beast, but with little luck.

“The struggle was back and forth, and for a moment we thought that despite the warthog’s size, the hungry leopard would almost certainly tire it out at some point, but the strength of the warthog was incredible, and it amazingly managed to overpower the leopard all while being choked!”

The warthog can be seen inching closer and closer to its burrow, pulling the leopard with it. It finally made it right to the entrance of its home.

However, just as the warthog refused to give up, so too did the leopard. In the leopard’s thinking, there was no way the prey was about to outwit the predator.

An unbelievable victory

The unusual spectacle eventually culminated with the leopard spreading its back legs out and using them to steady itself as it mustered all of its strength to try and pull the warthog away from its burrow.

The warthog successfully managed to put half of its body into the hole and at this point, would have been hailed a hero by his spectators, whether or not he made it out alive.

Warthogs are recognized for their resilience and fearless nature, often displaying remarkable determination in the face of danger. These animals are natural fighters!

One of their most effective survival strategies involves utilizing their burrows as defensive shelters. When threatened by predators like leopards, warthogs may retreat into these underground dens, as this one did, using the narrow and confined space to their advantage.

“The fight at this point was basically over, and the leopard knew it,” says Stephanie. “It reluctantly let go, and the warthog scurried backward into the safety of its burrow. The defeated leopard paced up and down the termite mound until it just sat in disbelief at its loss.”

The heroic warthog, no doubt, saw home in a completely new light that day.
