Watch The Sighting:
Patrick Mziyako, a field guide in Kruger National Park, captured this incredible sighting while taking his guests out on a game drive to the Kwaggaspan Waterhole near Skukuza. Patrick was drawn to a pack of wild dogs lying about in the morning hours, but as he approached his vehicle, he never could have anticipated what would happen next!
The Hunt Is On!
Slowly, four dogs stood up and began walking around, alerting Patrick that prey might be nearby. He quickly scanned the environment and spotted a herd of impalas about 100 meters away on the other side of the road.

When one of the dogs began to stalk the herd, Patrick knew that excitement was about to unfold, and everyone held their breath in anticipation! A few moments later, the rest of the pack joined in, and the hunt was on!
The dogs managed to isolate one of the impalas and direct it toward the waterhole where Patrick and his group had a perfect view of the kill. As the dogs took turns viciously tearing the impala apart, an unseen threat lurked in the shadows…

An Unexpected Thief Appears
Suddenly, a bold leopard who was perfectly camouflaged in the tall grass burst towards the dogs! Its charge caught the pack off guard, sending them scattering away from the carcass!
Before the dogs could fully understand what had happened, the leopard snatched the carcass and bolted to a nearby leadwood tree. It quickly climbed up high and secured the carcass within the grooves of the tree, completely out of reach of the dogs!

A Battle For The Prize
Patrick and his guests could not believe their eyes at the excitement unfolding before them!
“Wow, what a sighting! I was very excited because it is not easy to witness such a drama in Kruger.”
The wild dogs quickly ran over to the tree, but by the time they got there, it was too late. They spent a long while staring up at the tree, willing their meal to magically fall to the ground, but it was to no avail.

The dogs soon left the scene, disappointed in their stolen meal, and Patrick and his guests were left reflecting on how lucky they were to have witnessed such a rare encounter.
The Best Time For Safari Sightings
Patrick’s advice to all safari-goers is to head out early in the morning when you have the highest chance of observing animal activity and the lowest chance of observing other vehicles on the road.

This encounter reminds us that the wild is full of surprises, and no two game drives are the same. Whether it’s the power of teamwork in a wild dog hunt or the cunning tactics of a leopard, moments like these remind us why nature is both unpredictable and breathtaking!
