Desmond Clack, an experienced tour guide, set off with his group at dawn to a remote watering hole in Chobe National Park, eager to spot some elephants. When they arrived at the sight around 6:30 in the morning, they were captivated by a pride of lions enjoying an early morning feast of a young water buffalo.

Suddenly, a mother elephant emerged from the bush with two tiny twins following close behind her. Desmond couldn’t believe their luck, elephant twins are a once-in-a-lifetime encounter in the wild!

A Mother’s Fierce Stand

Despite the lions’ full bellies, the sight of an easy meal was too tempting to resist. The lions looked towards the mother and her small offspring and weighed their odds.

Sensing the danger, the mother took a defensive stance and attempted to ward off the pride. The lions, intimidated by her size, were kept at bay.

The brave display by the mother caused a temporary retreat from the lions, allowing the elephant family time to drink from the watering hole desperately. The respite was brief, however, as the lions encircled them with renewed confidence.

Lions Close In

As the mother elephant and her babies tried to navigate their way out of the situation, the lions crept closer and closer. Finally, in desperation, the mother charged at the pride in hopes of chasing them away for good.

It was this move that was her critical error, as her twins were now left temporarily unprotected. In a panic, one of the twins tripped, and the male lion seized his opportunity.

The mother elephant desperately ran back but was torn—protect her remaining calf or save the one already taken? As she weighed rescuing the first calf or defending the second, the male lion was already dragging the poor baby into the bushes.

The mother quickly charged after her first calf, leaving the lions easy access to her second calf. Desmond and his group watched in stunned silence, the tension unbearable.

The Wild’s Harsh Realities

The lions took their shot and went for the second calf. Luckily the mother turned herself around in time to save her baby before it was too late.

Her first calf, however, was not as fortunate. While the mother elephant managed to escape with her second calf, she could do nothing but watch in agony as the lions claimed their kill.

Desmond had turned off his camera at this point as he could not bring himself to film the heartbreaking scene in front of him. “In such moments, it’s best to understand the situation and remain quiet. Any noise can escalate the tension. It’s the harsh reality of the circle of life.”

A Rare Miracle

Only 1% of elephant births results in twins, making it an incredibly rare occurrence, and even more rare to be witnessed on safari. Unfortunately, the likelihood of survival for both twins in the wild is very low.

Raising one calf is already a monumental task. A mother must find enough food and water while constantly defending her young from predators, with two calves, the challenge is doubled.

Life in the wild is a constant battle for survival, and Desmond’s encounter showcased the remarkable strength and determination of both lions and elephants. It was a powerful reminder of resilience in the face of danger.
