For all its beauty, Nature can be brutal. Competition among species is integral to healthy ecosystems, leaving little room for human values. Be warned, though, this story is not for the faint-hearted.
Danie Hattingh submitted this graphic footage to Latest Sightings. He filmed it on the H3 road while visiting South Africa’s Kruger National Park.

The king approaches
As we join the action in Danie’s video, we see a sight most visitors would be thrilled to see. A male lion is walking towards his position.

According to Danie, it was one of a pair of males patrolling their territory. He went on to add that shortly before he started filming, the second male had disappeared into the dense bush on the right.
Change in posture
Subsequently, we note a change in the lion’s body language. Where at first he was relaxed, suddenly his posture changes as he spots something up ahead.

Our first assumption is that it might be potential prey as the male began slowly stalking forward. Unfortunately, it was something else entirely.
A tranquil nursery
Moments later, Danie pans the camera to show what would otherwise be a peaceful scene. While the rest of their clan is away, several young hyenas are soaking up the morning rays.

Clustered together, we first see a juvenile along with three smaller cubs. Next, we see a young adult with more cubs.

The unsuspecting creatures have no idea of the violence about to befall them.
No quarter given
Turning back to the lion, we see it is now within striking distance. Showing no hesitation, the big male rushes towards the hyenas.

Too late, the young hyenas see the lion bearing down on them and attempt to flee. While the juvenile runs away, the lion zeroes in on a cub.

Showing no mercy, he pounces on the infant, mauling it severely.

In seconds, he releases the cub and looks for his next victim. As the dust swirls, we see a tiny form writhing at his feet, evidently with a broken back.

Waiting in ambush
Meanwhile, we hear the strangled cries of another hyena. According to Danie, the second male had been waiting to ambush the others as they fled.

He added that he believes that it caught and dispatched one of the older animals.
Dominance declared
Later, the lion returned to the critically injured cub. Seizing it in his jaws, he crushed the small body, putting it out of its misery.

Then, having completed his grisly mission, the lion brushed his body against and nearby bush.

Next, he turned to spray the area with urine. Both actions are intended to declare his dominance over the territory and to warn his rivals not to let their guard down.
