When a male lion used his strength to appropriate a carcass, a lioness tried to steal it by deception. Had she not put her foot in it, she might have succeeded.

Scant reward
As Gareth told Latest Sightings, three lions had just chased a leopard off its kill. Subsequently, the dominant male claimed the scant remains for himself.

Don’t mind me
As he hunched over his prize, the lioness walked by, showing no apparent interest in either the male or the remains.
The same, however, could not be said for the male. Suspecting something was up, he watched her closely.
Mutual interest?
Suddenly, the lioness made a sharp turn towards the male, further heightening his curiosity.
As the pair made eye contact, it was evident that both were interested. But were they both interested in the same thing?
Tantalising taunts
Subsequently, the lioness circled behind the male, flicking her tail flirtatiously. With that, she had the male’s undivided attention.
With her eyes still locked on his, she boldly came closer.
However, as she entered his blind spot, her attention turned to the tantalising scraps lying before him.
When he turned to face her, however, she looked away, lulling him still deeper into her deception.
Setting the trap
No sooner had she passed than she once again turned, resulting in the pair sharing intense eye contact.
At this point, you can hardly blame him for thinking today might be his lucky day. Food and romance!
Emboldened by his gullibility, the lioness raised the stakes by rubbing her face against his. She then hopped over his back, further distracting him from the meal before him.
As his head spun, she lured him further with another head rub…
Before sneakily taking a sniff of her ultimate goal.
All the while, the male grew increasingly excited, believing he’d soon get to enjoy his other favourite pastime.

Playing coy
Rising, he prepared himself for the big moment as she crouched before him.
However, just as he prepared to mount her, she played coy by scooting away.
As she turned back to him, he had all but forgotten the carcass. However, for her, that was the only thing on her mind.
Even as she lowered her head to steal the carcass, the male was too lovestruck to realise what was going on.
However, the moment she grabbed the carcass and ran, the spell broke.
Putting her foot in it
Unfortunately, as she fled, the lioness stood on the carcass, pulling it from her jaws…
With the male in hot pursuit, she had no choice but to keep on running lest he punish her for her deception.
As he reclaimed the remains, he eyed her suspiciously. It will be some time before he is so easily duped again.
As for the lioness, she pretended to be interested in anything but the male and his smelly carcass. Boys, who needs them?
