A Rare Encounter
The Serengeti has a way of delivering the unexpected. James Mansell was mid-drive through the iconic Tanzania landscape when his vehicle came across a cheetah family.
The mother was moving purposefully through the grass while her cubs tucked in close behind her. Something had caught her attention.

It quickly became clear she was stalking something and a few moments later, the target was revealed. Ahead of her, a Grant’s Gazelle lamb roamed amongst the grass.
James explained that the mother of the lamb was nearby, but powerless against the cheetah. The baby seemed to understand this too, so its lay low in the grass in hopes of remaining undetected.
A Lesson, Not Just a Hunt
What happened next elevated the sighting from remarkable to extraordinary. Once the cheetah located the hidden calf, she didn’t immediately make the kill.
Instead, she appeared to deliberately hold back, nudging and encouraging her cubs toward the impala. The mother decided that this would be a perfect opportunity for her cubs to hone their hunting skills.
The cubs, still learning the mechanics of what their instincts were telling them to do, gave chase. They tumbled and scrambled after the baby impala with an energy that sat somewhere between play and purpose.
Their coordination was still a bit messy but their intent unmistakable. All the while, the mother impala watched from a distance, her distress visible but her options exhausted.
She tried a couple of times to run towards her baby but the mother cheetah quickly chased her away. Nothing was getting in the way of her cubs’ learning opportunity.
The Difficult Reality
Eventually the cubs caught the calf, but struggled to make the kill as their technique was still developing. The safari-goers had to sit through the tragic sounds of the lamb’s suffering and prayed for it to end as quickly as possible.

The moment is sure to stir up complicated emotions for anyone watching but it is also one of the most important moments in a young cheetah’s life. Learning to subdue prey is a skill that does not come fully formed, it requires practice, repetition, and the opportunity to try and fail under the safety of a mother’s supervision.
How Cubs Become Hunters
Cheetah mothers typically begin introducing cubs to live prey from around six months of age, gradually stepping back to allow the cubs to engage directly. This process continues for months, with the complexity of the prey and the degree of maternal involvement shifting as the cubs grow more capable.
By the time cubs are ready to separate from their mother at around 18 months, they are expected to hunt independently. Without these live practice sessions, that transition would be far more dangerous.
The mother’s role in this stage is not passive. It is one of the most active and demanding chapters of her entire parenting journey.
A Humbling Moment in the Wild
As the cubs fed and the mother cheetah quietly cleaned the blood from their faces, the safari group made the decision to move on, leaving the family to the stillness of the Serengeti. James recounted everyone’s sentiment towards the end of the encounter:
“This was quite an amazing moment, and something our guides had never seen. We all felt very humbled to see this, and witness such a story unfolding before us.”
This sighting is not easy to watch, but it is honest and offers us a glimpse into the unglamorous, essential machinery that keeps wild predators alive. In a wild world that doesn’t wait for young to be prepared, mothers are powerful teachers that hold a great responsibility.
