Nick Dale witnessed this adorable scene of a lion cub resting next to its mommy in the bush. Lions are a fairly common sight in safari game reserves; nonetheless, it’s always an incredible experience to see them.
Just like other big cats and domestic cats, lions enjoy sleeping throughout the day. They aim to hunt during the night when prey are resting and more vulnerable. Lions can sleep up to 20 hours a day, spending only 4 hours traversing the bush, hunting, and generally watching over their territory.
Lionesses will keep their cubs close by and hidden in bushes to protect them from predators like hyenas. Cubs are reliant on their mothers for the first year of their lives before venturing out on their own. Lionesses teach their babies how to hunt, hide, and survive on their own. Male cubs may even grow up to lead their own pride.
The lion cub mortality rate is 50%, meaning that many perish in the wild due to various environmental issues. For this reason, mothers take such intense care of their cubs, ensuring they grow up to continue the population.
