Lion family makes grand entrance onto road
Lions and other animals often walk along sand roads and roads within a reserve as these offer the least resistance. Sand roads are possibly quite handy if you have little ones in tow. This lioness and lion had seven of them!
The seven cubs tottered down the road, playfully interacting with their father, with his dark mane and coat, and stately presence.
Their mother watched them from the long grass at the side of the road, and they made sure they stayed in check with their parents’ leading.
With their oversized paws, curious expressions and bundles of youthful energy, the cubs appeared carefree, however, even this journey was part of an important stage in their development. Every walk with the pride provides opportunities to learn, explore, bond and gradually acquire the skills they will eventually need to survive.
Lion cubs spend much of their early lives learning through play. What appears to be simple fun can actually be valuable preparation for adulthood.
Cubs chase one another, pounce, wrestle, stalk, bite gently at ears and tails and practice ambush movements. These games help develop coordination, balance, strength and timing.

A lesson in patience for Mom and Dad
The grown lions showed extraordinary patience with the cubs. In spite of their playfulness and curiosity, the cubs also demonstrated tremendous respect for their parents. While this was an adventure for the cubs, their mother and father’s authority was not to be overruled.
Their mother and father remained focused on the journey ahead and proceeding forward down the sandy road. While the little ones were attentive to them, they were also enamoured by every sight and scent along the way. For young lions, the world is full of unfamiliar smells, sounds and movements that provide opportunities to learn.
Lions are highly social cats, unlike most other members of the cat family.
Their prides usually include related females, their offspring and one or more adult males. Pride size varies considerably according to habitat, prey availability and other factors.
A group containing seven cubs is particularly striking, although several females may contribute cubs to the same pride, meaning that not all of the cubs here necessarily belonged to the same mother.
Just another day in the life of this majestic pride
The curious cubs even paused to inspect the vehicle from which they were being filmed. Their wide eyes and curious gaze showed they were intrigued by the car.
However, the adult lions were on the move and they soon followed suit.
For game viewers, seeing a pride walking down the road in this way almost created the impression that the lions were deliberately putting on a show. In reality, they were simply going about their daily lives. ‘
