As three predators lay resting, a big bully arrived to put an end to their siesta. Despite giving way, their tormentor was determined to see them off entirely.
Anton Lategan submitted this dramatic footage to Latest Sightings. He filmed the action at Pridelands Game Reserve in South Africa.
Sleeping dogs
As Anton’s video begins, we see three African wild dogs resting on the banks of a waterhole. In the background, we see an elephant bull approaching.
Despite being one of Africa’s most ruthless predators, the dogs pose no threat to the world’s largest land mammal. But will the bull let sleeping dogs lie?
On the alert
As the giant gets ever closer, one of the dogs starts feeling nervous and gets up. Despite being short-sighted, the bull immediately detects the movement in front of it.
Instantly, he flares his ears, signalling that he is on the alert. Even so, he is unafraid and continues his advance.

Scent of predators
Consequently, the other two dogs also decide that perhaps now would be a good time to make way.
As the elephant reaches their former resting place, it detects the dogs’ scent. Although he is in no danger, just the smell of the predators is enough to set him off.
Job done?
Consequently, the bull charges towards the dogs, causing them to flee.
All three dogs run towards an embankment, hoping to placate the enraged bull.
As the bull chases them, he seems to think he has been successful.
Circling back
Surprisingly, however, the dogs merely run around a bush, as if intent on returning to their resting place.
Unsurprisingly, when the bull realises their prank, he is not happy in the least. Accordingly, he turns and sets off after them once again.
By this time, a second, younger bull has arrived on the scene. Seeing his comrade’s behaviour, he too becomes alarmed.

Running in circles
Meanwhile, the large bull continues chasing the dogs, homing in on one while the other two circle back towards the smaller bull.
However, as they do, that bull decides it’s time to join the chase, and he sets off after the pair.
Meanwhile, the lone dog easily outruns the frustrated bull, but the smaller bull blocks it from rejoining its friends.
All to himself
However, the younger bull is intent on chasing the pair and sets off to intercept them at the embankment.
Consequently, he leaves the path open for the isolated dog to follow. By now, however, the larger bull seems to have run out of steam.
Or, perhaps it’s just that he finally has everything just the way he wants it. A great big waterhole all to himself, with no unpleasant smells or pesky youngsters to disturb his peace.
