Angry Hippo Interrupts Hyena Meal

A Difficult Extraction

At the water’s edge near Pretoriuskop, Gerhard Hildebrand captured a lone hyena locked in a slow, determined battle with a large carcass, dragging it inch by inch out of the shallows while two others stood nearby and watch. Someone in Gerhard’s vehicle can be heard commenting “well done!” in respect to the efforts of the lone hyena.

Whether out of caution, laziness, or something in between, the other two hyenas held back for a while before eventually wading in to help. With a few extra sets of jaws on the job, the carcass was hauled fully onto the muddy bank.

A fourth hyena arrived not long after, and the clan got down to business. They fed with the usual hyena intensity, though something about the scene felt slightly off.

There was an undercurrent of tension, a collective unease that made the whole feast feel a little hurried. As it turns out, they had good reason to be nervous.

The Landlord Shows Up

Without much warning, a large hippo shouldered its way out of the water and lumbered toward the group. This, it seems, was not a coincidence.

The carcass came from the hippo’s water, and the hippo clearly has a few thoughts about that. To be clear, this was not an attack.

The hippo did not charge or scatter the group with any real aggression. Instead, it did something arguably more unnerving: it simply stood there, grazing and staring, making its displeasure known through sheer presence alone.

Hippos are intensely territorial around water, and while this one was not in a fighting mood, it was not in a retreating mood either. The standoff simmered quietly, with both parties holding their ground in an uneasy shared space.

For anyone who has spent time around hippos, the restraint on display here is almost surprising. These animals are capable of extraordinary aggression when pushed, and the hyenas were wise enough to register the risk, even if they were not quite willing to abandon their meal over it.

The Warning Shot

Eventually, the hippo’s patience reaches its limit. Its mouth swings open in that unmistakable wide gape that hippos use as a warning display, a glimpse of enormous canines and a clear message that tolerance has its limits.

Two of the hyenas scatter immediately, their instincts overriding their hunger for just a moment. But only for a moment.

Once it became obvious that the hippo was not following through, the pair crept back to the carcass and resumed feeding as though nothing happened. The hippo lingered a while longer before gradually losing interest and drifting away, leaving the clan to finish what they started.

An Uneasy Coexistence

What makes Gerhard’s footage so compelling is not the drama of a confrontation, but the absence of one. Two very different animals, both with legitimate stakes in the situation, finding a way to occupy the same space without it tipping into violence.

The hyenas needed to eat and the hippo needed to make a point. Somehow, both got what they came for.

It is a reminder that life in the wild is not always predator versus prey or winner versus loser. Sometimes it is just two parties tolerating each other, barely, and moving on.
