In MalaMala Game Reserve, field guide and wildlife photographer Deon Kelbrick captured an exciting moment that showcased the high-stakes decisions made every second in the African bush. His footage opens on a group of lions lying low in the sand, bodies pressed close to the ground, and muscles coiled in the unmistakable posture of a hunt about to unfold.
In the distance, a herd of buffalo moved steadily across the landscape, but something unexpected happened when a massive buffalo bull separated from the group and began walking straight toward one of the crouched lionesses. The rest of the herd continued on behind him, seemingly unaware of how close danger truly was.
As Deon filmed, he speculated that the bull may not have even seen the lioness directly in its path. Whether the approach was accidental or a deliberate act of defiance was unclear, but the tension built with every step.
A Chase Breaks Out
The lioness held her position until the distance closed to barely a meter, then in a heartbeat, everything exploded! The lioness spooked and retreated, and the buffalo charged after her without hesitation.
In an instant, the rest of the pride sprang into action. Dust erupted into the air as the lions and buffalo surged forward, each testing the other’s resolve.
Growls, hooves, and pounding feet blurred together as the scene transformed from a quiet stalk into full-scale chaos.
Defence Becomes Offence
Buffalo are among the most formidable prey animals in Africa, and this encounter shows exactly why. Bulls, in particular, are known for their willingness to stand their ground, or even charge, when they perceive a threat to the herd.
Whether this bull intended to confront the lioness or simply reacted instinctively, his response quickly turned defensive aggression into a dangerous chase. At one point, a male lion managed to leap onto the buffalo’s hindquarters, briefly securing a grip.

For a split second, it looked as though the tide may turn, but the buffalo’s sheer strength and momentum prove too much, and the lion lost its hold almost immediately.
The pursuit continues for several more minutes, with both sides charging, retreating, and circling in bursts of adrenaline. Dust hung thick in the air as the action weaved in and out of the bush, visibility fading along with certainty.
An Unresolved and Realistic Ending
Eventually, both the lions and the buffalo disappeared into the vegetation, leaving viewers with no clear resolution. While it can feel frustrating not to know the outcome, this is often the reality of wildlife encounters.
Many hunts are abandoned, and many charges are bluffs. Survival hinges not just on strength, but on timing, energy levels, and split-second decisions.
For lions, attacking a healthy adult buffalo is one of the most dangerous gambles they can take. For buffalo, standing firm can mean the difference between life and death for the herd.
