While they say that cats don’t like water, in the wild, it is sometimes necessary to take the plunge. In this article, we see the Misfit Pride lead their cubs to a potentially dangerous river crossing.
Filmmaker Robert Hofmeyr shared this amazing footage, filmed in Botswana’s Chobe National Park. Latest Sightings is helping raise awareness of his Kickstarter campaign to fund a documentary he is filming about the lions.
On the move
Squeezed between the territories of two neighbouring prides, we join the Misfits as they patrol the Chobe floodplain.
The pride consists of three adult females and their respective offspring.
Cat nap
Subsequently, as is so often the case with lions, the pride stops to rest. If nothing else, lions know how to conserve energy for important events.
At the same time, pride members reaffirm their bonds, thus enhancing the cohesion of the group. Who knows what challenges lie ahead.

Moving on
With many mouths to feed, it isn’t long before the pride moves on. Perhaps because they’re struggling to find prey, the lions head to the river’s edge.
This permanent water source is a vital lifeline for all wildlife. However, at times it is also an obstacle to resources on the far bank.
Cautious approach
Making their way onto a finger of dry land, it becomes obvious that the pride intends to cross. However, they are wary, as the waters teem with dangerous hippos and massive crocodiles.
But, needs must, and the lions inch into the shallows. As they do, one of the cubs takes the lead.
However, Mom puts her paw on its back, wanting to make sure it is safe to proceed.
Finally satisfied, the cub is the first to take the plunge, gently encouraged by Mom. But will the pride follow?
Copy cats
Emboldened by the cub’s bravery, the rest of the pride follows. While lions are competent swimmers, they’re eager to get back on dry land.
As they paddle across the gentle current, the tension is palpable. At any moment, a hippo or crocodile might attack.

Welcoming committee
As the first members reach the far bank, they turn to check on their comrades. These apparent displays of mutual care are always touching to see in Africa’s apex predators.
But more importantly, as the last members reach dry land, it’s great to see that they’ve overcome the obstacle without incident.
Even so, there’s no time to waste. As the skies darken, the pride needs to get into position for the night’s hunt.
