The tiger and tigress had been mating for a few days when the epic brawl unfolded. Deepanshu, a wildlife guide in the Ranthambore National Park in India, recounted the moment for Latest Sightings.
Tiger and tigress come together for mating rituals
“I have witnessed many awe-inspiring moments in the wild. However, this recent sighting of a tiger and tigress mating was truly remarkable,” said Deepanshu.
He explained he had been observing the two big cats’ mating rituals over a period of a few days. “The majestic animals were a sight to behold as they roamed around the forest together, marking their territory and indulging in playful activities,” he said.
Action heats up after mating
“Tigers are apex predators and one of the most magnificent creatures in the world,” he continued. “They are known for their beautiful stripes and powerful build, making them a symbol of strength and courage.”
He explained that they were also highly territorial animals, with each tiger marking and defending their own territory.
“Things took a dark turn after the mating was over,” Deepanshu recalled. “The tiger started attacking the cubs of the tigress from her previous partner.”
Tigers launch into one another with explosive action
Deepanshu said that what ensued was ‘a brutal sight to behold.’ The tiger attempted to eliminate any of his own offspring’s potential competition.
The tigress, on the other hand, was fiercely protective of her cubs and tried to stop the tiger from harming them.
The two majestic creatures came against one another with relentless determination. These were the same two which only hours earlier had been blissfully engaging in mating rituals.
‘Polyandry’ comes into the spotlight
When it comes to mating habits, tigers are known for their promiscuity. A female tiger will mate with multiple males, often resulting in a litter of cubs with different fathers. This is known as polyandry, and it allows the female tiger to produce a variety of offspring, increasing the chances of survival for her cubs.

Deepanshu said that in the end the tigress’ efforts were successful and she was able to fend the tiger off. The cubs and the tigress then slunk into the thick of the forest and out of sight. They had survived the frightening onslaught of the male tiger.
Meanwhile, the male lay tired and somewhat defeated out in the open. He had done his utmost to ensure the future success of his offspring, however, he hadn’t bargained on how relentless and dangerous a mother’s love can be!
This tigress had definitely put him in his place.
This rare sighting was a reminder of the intriguing dynamics which exist between members of a species. Survival of one’s lineage is of paramount importance in the wild, and this male tiger acted out of instinct. However, the mother’s instinct to protect her cubs proved to be stronger.
