An Ambush Gone Wrong
There are days in the bush where everything goes according to plan. Then there are days like this one.
Yoni Wolpe was out on a game drive when the vehicle came across a cheetah lying low in the grass, perfectly still and well concealed. To any untrained eye, the spot looked empty, but the cheetah was there, patient and waiting.
A family of warthogs came trotting along at a brisk pace, heads up, tails raised like little antennas, completely unaware of the predator hidden just meters ahead of them. It looked, for a brief moment, like the cheetah had pulled off a textbook setup.
Then everything unravelled.
The Moment It All Fell Apart
As the warthogs closed the distance, something shifted. Whether it was a scent on the breeze or a flicker of movement in the grass, the family suddenly clocked the danger.
Panic erupted, and the warthogs scattered in every direction, some breaking left, some right, darting and weaving around the cheetah in a chaotic blur.
The cheetah, for its part, looked genuinely confused. It rose slightly from its crouch but seemed to have no real plan in place. It stood there, almost watching with the same bewilderment as the safari guests, as the family divided and streamed past it on all sides.
The ambush had dissolved before it had even properly begun.
Turning the Tables
Once the warthogs had cleared the immediate danger zone, the cheetah seemed to remember its role in this situation and half-heartedly launched into a chase, but one of the larger warthogs wasn’t done. In a move that drew laughter from Yoni’s vehicle, it wheeled around and came barrelling straight back at the cheetah with full commitment.
The cheetah wanted absolutely no part of it. It turned tail immediately and scrambled up into the rocks to escape, the warthog was hot on its heels until it was satisfied the threat had been dealt with.
The predator, built for speed and precision, had just been chased off by its own intended prey!
Warthogs Are Tougher Than They Look
Scenes like this are a good reminder that warthogs are far from defenceless. They are stocky, powerful animals with sharp tusks capable of causing serious injury, and they are well aware of it.
While their first instinct is to flee, often reversing into burrows so their tusks face outward toward any following predator, they are not above standing their ground when pushed.

Cheetahs, by contrast, are built for speed rather than confrontation. They have lean, lightweight frames that are vulnerable to injury, and a physical setback can be genuinely life-threatening for an animal that depends entirely on its ability to run.
Walking away from a risky fight is almost always the smarter call.
