The spectacular sighting was a showcase of the grace and agility which characterise the cheetah species.

Cheetah spotted walking alongside the road
When Tommy stopped his car to film the cheetah, it was walking purposefully across the savannah, in full view of motorists.

Its attention was clearly fixed elsewhere as it walked along. This was the meaningful gait of a cheetah on a mission.

Cheetah breaks out into a sprint
It walked for a few minutes, with continued focus, and then the magic happened… it broke out into a full-blown sprint.
The object of its focus had been a steenbok which was feeding in the nearby thicket.
The poor steenbok stood no chance, as the cheetah pummeled towards it. It reacted instantly to the cheetah’s ambush, leaping away with sharp zigzags to confuse the predator. Cheetahs rely on speed and quick acceleration rather than endurance, often reaching speeds of over 90km/h during short chases.

A memorable chase
Dust was kicked up into the air as the cheetah chased the steenbok, which ran changing direction at intervals to keep the cheetah off its tracks.
Steenbok are known for their agility and sudden changes in direction help them evade predators in open bushveld and grassland habitats. As the pair raced across the dry ground, the cheetah carefully adjusted its path, using its long tail for balance while the steenbok darted through shrubs in a desperate attempt to escape.
In spite of the steenbok putting in its best efforts, the cheetah had honed its hunting techniques, and with dust flying out as it followed the steenbok’s leading, it eventually closed in on the poor buck.

The tiny creature stood no chance and in a matter of moments, the cheetah was on top of it.

Dust rises as cheetah successfully catches buck
Game viewers saw a cloud of dust where cheetah and steenbok had been running. This same dust rose from the final collision site, where the cheetah had pulled the buck to the ground. The force of the cheetah’s assault had been so great, the dust was as a cloud on the horizon where the cheetah now lay, with the buck.

The red dust lingered momentarily in the air, a testament to the cheetah’s impressive speed.

Cheetah reappears with steenbok in its jaws
Then, just like that, the cheetah reemerged. It had regained its regal composure, moving with the grace so common to its species. This grace was unaffected by the heaviness of the steenbok which it now carried in its jaws.
It had been triumphant, along with Tommy, who had captured everything on camera!
Cheetahs are specialised hunters built for speed, agility, and rapid acceleration across open grasslands and savannas. Unlike lions or leopards that rely more on strength and ambush, cheetahs depend on explosive bursts of speed to catch prey such as impala, gazelles, and steenbok.
Their lightweight bodies, long legs, flexible spines, and large nasal passages help them sprint at incredible speeds for short distances.
During a hunt, a cheetah will carefully stalk its target before launching into a fast chase, as this one did.
