Clever Leopard Digs a Hole Under a Fence

When faced with a jump too high to make, this leopard looked to go under instead!

The only natural barriers to how far animals can travel are things like land formation, energy, intervention from other animals, and the location of whatever kind of nest or den they’ve made for themselves. Not things like metal fences.

This leopard that Owen Grobler and Katie Nicolle were filming had encountered just such a metal fence and wasn’t entirely sure what to do with it. It clearly wanted to cross to the other side and yet seemed aware that it might somehow get punished for doing so.

Welcome To Jurassic Park

Owen and Katie’s vehicle was coasting alongside the edge of the fence, and at first it looked like they might not see anything at all. Leopard’s are notoriously stealthy cats that don’t always flaunt their presence in the same way that lions or wild dogs might.

Quickly, though, the leopard emerged from the trees and bushes that were growing thickly on the other side of the fence. It didn’t look like it had been lurking deep in the foliage, but its pattern had kept it from being immediately obvious.

Once it had revealed itself the leopard feigned a complete lack of interest in the fence and the vehicle. It ambled along for a little bit, and made a big show of sniffing a patch of grass before finally turning its attention to the world separated by the fence.

Big Cat Calculations Of Freedom

The leopard looked keenly at the vehicle, assessing its capacity as a threat, but quickly dismissed it and thoroughly examined the rest of the scenery the other side of the fence.

Aside from the slightly wider toad that Owen and Katie were using, there didn’t seem to be any significant difference between the human’s side or the leopard’s side of the fence.

Nevertheless the leopard was clearly dissatisfied with its own side of the fence and it was laying plans ready to cross to the other side where it would presumably feel more free and better able to roam in search of prey.

Why Did The Big Cat Cross The Road?

The leopard was wary, almost as though it was expecting some kind of patrol to come by at any moment and it had to make sure it timed its escape from the fence for just the right moment.

It crouched down in the dirt and crept closer to the boundary. Some other kind of animal had already made an impression in the road, but only a shallow one, and the leopard glanced up at the top of the fence, clearly considering if it would be easier to jump it.

It took it a bit of squirming and squeezing and plenty of stopping and using its whiskers to make sure there was room, but eventually the leopard did decide to go for it, and forced its way through between the fence and the ground.

Life On The Other Side

The leopard hesitated a little, flicked its tail at Owen and Katie as if to say that its escape wasn’t all that impressive, and then headed off into the bush that looked exactly the same on this side of the fence.

As if to prove just how good these big cats are at staying unseen, the second the leopard disappeared into the trees a second one appeared just behind it, also forced itself through the hole, quicker now that it’d seen it done, and hurried off after the first.
