A Mischievous Meeting on the Road

While cruising along a game reserve road in South Africa, safari tourist Ismaeel Randaree found himself in an unexpected encounter that completely captured the mischievous nature of young hyenas.

Ahead on the paved road was a white SUV, halted for reasons that shortly became clear. Standing behind it was a young hyena, whose eyes shone with mischief.

It was yanking excitedly on the tow hook at the back of the vehicle! The play of the young hyena initially seemed harmless, but as it tugged at the metal fixture, it became clear that this cub was devoted to its new hobby.

As Ismaeel’s vehicle approached, the hyena remained planted on the spot. Its eyes tilted up with an almost sheepish glint in them before backing up slightly.

For one brief moment, the act seemed done. When the SUV started moving away slowly, however, it was apparent that the curious cub had more in store.

Persistence Pays Off

The hyena began to pursue the departing vehicle, and was soon accompanied by a couple of its fellow clan members who were intrigued by the commotion. Finally, the lead hyena had another go at the tow hook and, with one last triumphant move, it managed to pull its plastic cover right off!

For those who witnessed it, the sighting was a funny and memorable experience. For the hyena, it was just another opportunity to explore, to try things out, and learn about its environment.

A Curious and Clever Species

This kind of behaviour might seem comical, but it tells us a great deal about hyenas. In reality, they are impressively clever and inquisitive animals.

Spotted hyenas live in complicated social clans and must be able to think on their feet at all times in the wild. They live not just on strength, but on problem-solving and curiosity.

These tendencies urge them to investigate everything from bones and branches to, every now and then, the backside of a safari truck.

Juvenile hyenas, particularly, utilize play and exploration as essential learning tools. By biting and pulling at things and mouthing foreign objects, they strengthen both body and brain, learning to coordinate and figure out what is safe, dangerous, or edible.

So, even if this cub’s fascination with a tow hook seems utterly playful, it’s actually part of a deeper process of skill-building that one day will make it a skilled adult hunter and scavenger.

Play and the Hyena Way

Play is vital in the animal kingdom, and in hyenas, it has a number of roles. Playful actions, like mock fighting or investigating man-made objects, reinforces social bonds within the clan and teaches valuable survival techniques.

In this case, the cub’s curiosity provided a harmless outlet for that urge. While hyenas are notorious in myth for their laugh-like cry and scavenging habits, such an encounter as this one shows a different image: one of intelligence, boldness, and even of humour.

This sighting reminds us that hyenas are not the villains they are portrayed to be, but rather very intelligent, social animals whose curiosity drives them to interact with the world on an ongoing basis.
