A Peaceful Paddle
Captured by Peter Martin, this sighting shows a mother Egyptian goose gliding calmly across a quiet stretch of water with her small troop of goslings trailing behind her. It’s the kind of scene that plays out on wetlands and dams across the region every day: a proud parent shepherding her fluffy brood along, keeping a watchful eye on the surroundings while the little ones paddle to keep up.

For a while, everything looked peaceful. The goslings stuck close to their mother, bobbing along in her wake as she led them across the water. But peace on the water rarely lasts long when territory is involved, and this outing was about to take a dramatic turn.

Uninvited Guests
The calm was broken when two coots arrived on the scene, and they weren’t interested in sharing the space. The mother goose had taken up a position on a pile of sticks in the water, likely close to where her goslings were resting or feeding, and the coots seemed determined to push her off it.

Coots are notoriously territorial birds themselves, and it didn’t take long for the situation to escalate. The two intruders began pressing in on the mother goose, attempting to chase her away from her spot.

What started as a minor disagreement quickly turned into a full blown standoff.
Wings Wide, Voices Raised
All three birds erupted into a chorus of aggressive honking, each one refusing to back down. The mother goose responded by spreading her wings out wide, a classic warning display used to make herself appear larger and more intimidating to the coots pressing in on her.

It’s a display built entirely on nerve, and in this case, it worked. Despite being outnumbered, the mother goose held her ground and pushed back against the pair, honking and flaring until the coots decided the fight wasn’t worth it.
Eventually, one of the coots chased her off the sticks, and all three birds fled the scene. There was no clear winner to the battle, but the mother goose defended her territory with ferocity.
Small Birds, Big Attitude
Egyptian geese are known throughout the region for their bold and often aggressive temperament, especially when goslings are nearby. Despite their relatively modest size, they are quick to confront intruders, whether it’s another water bird, a larger predator, or even other geese encroaching on their space.

Mothers in particular become intensely protective once their young hatch, and will rarely hesitate to chase off a perceived threat rather than retreat.
Coots, for their part, are just as feisty, and clashes like this one are a common sight wherever territory and resources overlap on the water.

In the end, this was a small skirmish with a simple lesson behind it: when it comes to protecting their young, even the most modest of animals can summon an outsized amount of courage. The mother goose may not be the biggest bird on the water, but on this day, she was undoubtedly the fiercest.
