A Snack in the Middle of the Road
Guide and photographer Jaco Joubert was out in MalaMala Game Reserve when he came across a scene that could only be described as adorable chaos in the making. A tiny elephant calf stood in the middle of the road, utterly absorbed in munching on a branch, completely unaware of the drama that was about to unfold around it.
For a few peaceful moments, it was just a calf being a calf, testing out its trunk skills and enjoying a snack in the open road. But elephant herds are rarely quiet for long, and it wasn’t long before the calf’s mother and another medium sized adult entered the frame.
Tension in the Herd
As the calf’s mother approached with the second elephant close by, the atmosphere shifted. The mother, ever protective, wrapped her trunk snugly around her calf, holding it close as the two adults stood practically face to face.
For a moment, everything held steady. Then, in classic curious calf fashion, the little one decided it wanted to see what the fuss was about.
It took a few hesitant steps toward the other elephant, seemingly testing the waters and pushing its boundaries just a little too far.
A Shove Sends the Calf Tumbling
That curiosity didn’t sit well with the other adult. Without much warning, the elephant shoved forward into the calf and its mother, sending the youngster rolling onto its side.
In the chaos that followed, the two adults locked tusks briefly, asserting dominance while the calf lay helpless on the ground beneath them.

The Bull Steps In
Just as things looked like they might spiral further, the herd’s bull intervened. He moved in and stepped protectively over the fallen calf, using his size and presence to diffuse the tension between the two sparring adults.
With the bull standing guard, the calf was able to scramble back to its feet, a little shaken but unharmed.
Elephant herds are built on this kind of social structure, where dominant individuals step in to manage conflict and protect the most vulnerable members. Calves are given plenty of grace to explore and test boundaries, but when things get too heated, the adults are quick to restore order.
