When this young elephant came across an older bull lying down, he decided to try his luck in asserting dominance. Watch his comical antics as the larger animal tries getting to his feet.
Fergus Rosslee sent this amusing footage to Latest Sightings. He filmed it while on a game drive in South Africa’s Kruger National Park.
Time to wake up
As we join Fergus at the sighting, we see an elephant bull struggling to get to his feet. Elephants will occasionally lie down to rest, and we assume this was the case here.
However, due to their massive bulk, getting up again is sometimes easier said than done. To do so, he must first roll onto his belly.
Bachelor bulls
Also present are two younger bulls. Male elephants will often form bachelor herds, leading a life largely separate from the females and their young.
Within these groups, there is a distinct hierarchy based on age and size. Accordingly, when one of the youngsters sees the older bull at a disadvantage, he decides to try his luck.

Various positions
Whether out of playfulness or delusions of grandeur, the younger bull does his best to keep the larger animal pinned to the ground. At one point, he literally stands on the older animal.
Meanwhile, in the background, the other youngster watches proceedings from a safe distance. He obviously knows better than to get on the wrong side of the big guy.
Amusingly, the first youngster has no such qualms, even lying on top of the prostrate bull. All the while, the older animal growls in protest.

Another try
When the youngster does finally get off him, the big bull throws his leg in the air, hoping to get the momentum necessary to get onto his belly.
But for some reason, he doesn’t manage to do so. Seeing this, the younger bull positions himself on the near-side of the bull.
As the bull once again tries to rise, the youngster uses his head to keep him down.
Having tried several times from one side, the bull rolls over, hoping to get it right this time.
However, before he can try, the youngster once again lays his whole body over his adversary.
Revenge?
Eventually, the youngster tires of the game and wanders off to join the third bull. With that, the bull tries once more to rise.
This time around, he has better luck, finally rolling onto his belly.
As he does, his tormentor watches and seems to realise he might be in trouble.
As the big bull finally gets to his feet, the once-brave bully turns and flees.
And for good reason. As expected, the bigger animal takes off after him, determined to get revenge. Unfortunately, the video ends, but we kind of hope he got his own back on the cheeky upstart.
