Just like many of safari-goers, Abdurrashid Dhodhat was on the lookout for lions for their kids to spot. On this occasion they didn’t just find a lion, they came across the entire pride.
At the Kruger National Park, past the Biyamiti Weir and on the S23 road, some lucky lions had pulled off a successful hunt, and now the entire pride were blocking off the road as they fed on the carcass. Abdurrashid sent the footage to Latest Sightings.

A Feast For All
A kill like this was the motherlode for this lion pride and they were taking full advantage of it. By the time Abdurrashid’s footage began the mass of big cats around the body of the buffalo completely hid it from view.
Almost all of the pride was sharing in the meal, with a few lazy lions lounging at the side of the road. Presumably these are the big cats that had already eaten their fill, or these were the ones that were waiting their turn for a chance at the carcass.

One enormous lioness appeared to be patrolling the area, as she wasn’t paying much attention to the meal itself, but instead moved around the area with her gaze always facing outwards.

Eyes On The Prize
Bringing down a buffalo big enough to feed an entire pride would not have been a small or quiet affair, and other animals in the area might have heard all of the commotion.

Hyenas might be the most famous for it, but any meat eating predator would gladly take the opportunity to steal a mouthful of food without having to work for it themselves, and the sounds of a scuffle means there’s food to be had.
This patrolling lioness was likely on the lookout for just such scavengers that might be in the area, to make sure that if they came sniffing about they would very quickly realize the mistake they were about to make.
Front Row Seats
With the amount of vehicles around, it was also possible that the lioness was guarding against them, not realizing that they were simply there to watch the meal instead of trying to take any of it.

Most of the vehicles had come from one direction, forced to pull over by the amount of big cats spilling across the road, but Abdurrashid was lucky enough to have come from the other direction which meant they had an almost unobstructed view of the lions.
This included the feast, but also the adorable little lion cub that hurried along from one side of the road to the other to make sure it was involved in the spectacle that was taking place.

All In A Day’s Work
It must have taken the lion pride a good long time to get through that buffalo, but because the whole pride was there they wouldn’t need to station a lion to protect the meat while some went to fetch the others.

With so many lions feasting on the carcass, there would be nothing but bones by the time the scavengers got the opportunity to feed. This lion pride would definitely be well fed though.
