Two adorable adult male lions playfully wrestle and paw at each other on the grass.
Mike Kirkman of MalaMala Game Reserve spotted this adorable moment between two lion brothers. We know these fierce predators as the kings of the safari (and jungle), but we often forget that they have a softer side.
While few people witness it, male lions can be as affectionate and playful as cubs. They may even look like very, very large kittens rolling around in the grass.
These two, most likely brothers, show love to each other to build a strong social bond. Close relationships between lions in a pride are essential to the functioning of the family. The closer the bonds, the more likely the pride will succeed as hunters and as a solid group.
Male lions, and adult lions in general, may playfully chase each other to show off their soft side. They’re just like domestic cats in this manner.
Adult lions will often engage in chases to exercise and stay ready for the real deal. These moments sometimes happen after a successful hunt, expressing their excitement for a huge, satisfying meal. They can also act as stress relief—just as humans can’t have all work and no play!
