A Peaceful Afternoon by the Water
Graham Stephenson and his group had settled in for a relaxed sighting, watching a herd of elephants make their way between waterholes at Sabi Sands Nature Reserve. There were several adults in the group, along with a couple of calves trailing close behind, all moving with that unhurried, swaying gait elephants are known for.
The herd had been drinking, browsing, and generally going about their business, seemingly unbothered by the safari vehicle parked a respectful distance away. Graham captured several clips throughout the sighting, but one moment in particular stood out from the rest, and it’s easy to see why.
A Change of Heart
In the standout clip, one of the adult elephants wanders over to a small patch of water near the vehicle and begins to drink. Nothing about the moment suggests anything unusual is about to happen.
She finishes drinking and starts to move off, seemingly ready to rejoin the rest of the herd. Then, almost as if she’s had a sudden change of heart, she stops and turns back around.
With clear purpose in her stride, she walks straight back to the water, dips her trunk in, and draws up a generous amount.

Without a beat of hesitation, she aims her trunk at the vehicle and lets it fly, sending a spray of water straight over the guests!
