Bird waits for prey to come into view
The Goliath heron could be seen standing motionless in a shallow part of the river. This statue-like stance stood a purpose. The heron was hunting.

The large bird was quite aware of everything that was happening in the waters around it.
Bird strikes with impressive speed
In a split second, its long neck shots forward with incredible speed, and its dagger-shaped bill pierced the surface of the water. This was all with the intent of spearing a fish.
In just a matter of moments it was evident that the heron had been successful. It lifted its head to reveal a large fish.
The bird’s dramatic display of patience, precision, and raw power had paid off!
The Goliath heron (Ardea goliath) is the biggest heron species in the world.
Adults stand between 1,2 and 1,5 metres tall and can have a wingspan approaching 2,3 metres.
Despite weighing only around four to five kilograms, the species’ impressive height and broad wings make it unmistakable among African waterbirds.
Heron catches exceptionally large fish
It lifted the big fish up in its beak with relative ease, displaying impressive strength.
Goliath herons are no strangers to big catches like this one. Unlike many smaller herons which feed on minnows, frogs, and insects, the Goliath heron specialises in catching surprisingly large fish.
In fact, fish measuring between 30 and 45 centimetres are common prey, and exceptionally large individuals have been recorded catching fish weighing well over one kilogram!
Species such as tilapia, catfish, tigerfish, mullet, and carp may all fall victim depending on the habitat.
A large meal satisfies heron’s hunger
The bird’s antics soon became even more impressive, when it lifted the fish up with its beak, tilted its head back and stretching out its long neck, proceeded to swallow the fish! This was a big meal, however the Goliath heron was up to it!
In a few moments, the fish was, you could say, history! This was a magnanimous hunting effort and the heron lived up to the species’ reputation of being a formidable hunter.
The Goliath heron’s enormous size is more than just impressive to look at. Its size is actually essential for its hunting strategy. Longer legs allow it to wade into deeper water than most other herons, giving it access to fish that remain beyond the reach of smaller competitors. Its long neck acts like a tightly coiled spring, while its thick, sharply pointed bill functions as both a spear and a pair of forceps, allowing it to seize slippery prey securely.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Goliath heron’s hunting style is its patience. It often spends several minutes standing completely still, watching the water with intense concentration.
This ‘stand-and-wait’ technique conserves energy while allowing fish to become accustomed to the bird’s presence. Many fish eventually ignore what appears to be an unmoving object, drifting close enough for the heron to strike.
