A view into the ‘secret life’ of hyenas
The cubs put on a full display of playfulness to the delight of game viewers.
The lively scene in Kapama Private Game Reserve revealed a side of spotted hyenas which is often overlooked. Hyenas are often portrayed as a sinister bunch, so it was refreshing to see their lighter, more jovial side.
Hyenas appear to be playing game of tag
Instead of fighting over food or competing with predators, the group of young hyenas was seen chasing, circling and playfully darting after one another. It was as though they were playing a game of tag. Only it seemed that they took turns breaking the rules! Some of the play was rather boisterous. However, it was all done in the spirit of learning and developing new skills.
A learning experience
Their energetic behaviour might have looked chaotic to human observers, however play is an important part of hyena social life. It can help strengthen relationships, develop physical skills and reinforce the bonds that hold their complex societies together.
The physical abilities developed during play are useful for animals, like hyenas, which depend on strength, stamina and cooperation.

Spotted hyenas are exceptional endurance hunters. Although they have a reputation as scavengers, they are highly capable predators and actually kill much of the prey they consume themselves!
Their ability to travel considerable distances and maintain a pursuit over time is one of their greatest advantages. For these cubs, a playful chase therefore had parallels with behaviours which would become important later in their lives.
Play can also teach young hyenas about social boundaries. Hyena clans have complicated relationships, and animals need to learn how to interact without unnecessarily escalating every encounter into a serious confrontation.
A young hyena which chases a sibling, for example, is learning to recognise when another animal wants to continue playing and when it has had enough. Signals involving posture, movement, vocalisations and facial expressions can all provide information.
Hyenas communicate using a wide range of sounds, including whoops, growls, groans and the famous high-pitched vocalisation often called a ‘laugh’.
As cute as the whole scenario was, it was also quite humbling; as one day these joyful cubs will be full-grown hyenas which will apply these skills to prey and the defense of territory. Then they might not appear half as cute!
Spotted hyenas are fascinating, highly intelligent predators with a complex social life. They are the largest of the four hyena species. Their powerful jaws and specialised teeth allow them to crush and digest bones, making them extremely efficient feeders.
It’s not just hyena cubs which play. Adult hyenas can also play, although playful behaviour is generally easier to observe in younger hyenas.
