A tense encounter between two of Africa’s most formidable predators can unfold in seconds. However, sometimes the most remarkable moments are surprisingly slow, as was in this rare sighting, filmed at Chaliloop.

Spotted hyena brazenly approaches lioness

This spotted hyena cautiously approached a lioness after she had lashed out at it and tried to chase it away.

The hyena began slowly biting at it, creating an extraordinary confrontation between the two species which regularly compete for food and territory.

The lioness appeared to remain close to the hyena, allowing the encounter to develop at close range. Rather than launching immediately into a full attack, the hyena moved carefully, testing the lioness with its powerful jaws.

Spotted hyenas and lions are among Africa’s most important large carnivores, and their relationship is complicated. They compete for many of the same prey animals and can encounter one another around carcasses.

Whether a hyena challenges a lion often depends on the balance of numbers between the animals.

Lioness appears to be complacent as hyena closes in

This hyena continued to press closer to the lioness, in a moment made more unusual by the lioness’ apparent complacency.

The hyena continued pester the lioness, biting at her hide, while the lioness appeared relatively subdued.

Lioness sits up and swipes at hyena with claws

Eventually though, she had had enough and sat bolt upright, bearing her teeth and lashing out at the pesky hyena with her claws.

She snarled and swiped at the hyena but failed to launch into a full-on attack. It was as though the hyena simply wasn’t worth her effort.

Lioness shows hyena who is boss

A lone hyena generally has to be cautious around a lion. Lions are substantially larger and powerfully built, while spotted hyenas rely heavily on their strong jaws, endurance and social cooperation.

The slow biting behaviour may therefore have been part of a tense interaction rather than an immediate attempt to kill the lioness.

Predators use body language, vocalisations and physical contact to communicate dominance, aggression and boundaries.

A hyena approaching a lion at close range is taking a considerable risk, and the lion’s response can determine whether the confrontation ends quickly or escalates.

Fortunately for this hyenaa, the lioness decided not to respond with a forceful attack. She simply wasn’t interested.

The hyena continued to provoke her, but she held her ground. She eventually even lay down again.

Lioness returns to lying position

Nature has a surprising way of teaching us about life and in this instance, the lioness showed how even when we are provoked, we can pick our battles and choose not to respond.

Interestingly, hyenas possess exceptionally powerful jaws capable of crushing and processing bones. Their strong teeth and muscular jaws allow them to consume parts of carcasses that many other predators cannot use efficiently.

This gives them an important ecological role because relatively little of a large carcass may go to waste.
