Hyena Tries To Hide In The Road From Wild Dogs

A silly hyena thought it might have been spotted by wild dogs, so it hid right in the open behind nothing to make sure they didn’t catch it!

Predator versus predator often makes for a tense and exciting sighting, with lots of noise and the constant threat of a physical fight breaking out among animals that really don’t like each other.

Muhammad Zafar Suliman filmed the moment that a pack of wild dogs came across a hyena with some of its clan, and the moment that the hyena did its best to hide without a hiding place.

Family Day Out

At the beginning of Muhammad’s footage, the hyena had already laid down in the middle of the road with its eyes locked onto a bend further up.

Behind it, two smaller cubs were aimlessly wandering around the long grass at the roadside. These two cubs would be particularly vulnerable to any other potential predators in the area.

Their small size, lack of strength and of experience, would make them likely prey for anything like the pack of wild dogs that was approaching. Whether or not the crouching hyena knew the wild dogs were coming, or just happened to be looking the right way is unknown.

In The Way

A road obviously isn’t the most ideal place to hide, as not only is it an open and flat space, cars and other animals also use it while trying to get from one place to another.

There were only two vehicles, with one coming around the corner that the wild dogs would soon use, but the oncoming truck had to do some maneuvering to get around the hyena laying down in the middle of the road.

Rather than simply drive on by, the truck paused to get a good look at the hyena, which didn’t seem likely to run away and only raised its head to look back at the truck. It hadn’t yet spotted that a lone wild dog stood in the distance, also watching.

Unlikely To Get Along

The hyena and the car didn’t have any problems with each other. The hyena wasn’t going to move out of the way of the car, so it went around the hyena instead and there were no issues.

It would be a different story with the dogs, however. As rival predators that hunt from the same source of prey, the presence of one in the other’s area can be all it takes for a fight to break out.

On top of this, the hyena appeared to have cubs with it at the side of the road, which the wild dogs wouldn’t think twice about killing and eating for an easy meal.

Worst Hiding Place Ever

The wild dog, curious at what it could see, began making its way down the road when another joined it. The hyena, seeing them coming, hunkered down in the middle of the road.

Maybe it thought that if it didn’t move the wild dogs wouldn’t see it, or maybe this hyena was unfortunate enough to have poor eyesight, but when the wild dogs figured out what it was they picked up the pace.

Eventually the hyena realized that it had been spotted, because of course it had, and it turned and fled. Whether the wild dogs pursued it far, or just enough to scare it away is unknown.
