A Standoff in Sabi Sands
In the heart of Sabi Sands Game Reserve, guide Deon Kelbrick found himself front row to one of Africa’s most familiar and fascinating rivalries. A group of about five lions were settled into a hard-earned meal, and their bodies were sprawled confidently around a carcass.

Just meters away, however, danger was lurking with hungry eyes. A clan of hyenas looked on eagerly with their ears forward and eyes locked on the feast, waiting for a single mistake.
Testing the Limits
Hyenas are masters of patience, and they know that time can be just as powerful as strength. As the seconds passed, one particularly bold individual began to edge closer, moving with purpose.

Step by step, it closed the gap, but lions, especially when feeding, are far from careless. In a flash, one lion lifted its head and locked eyes with the intruder.
Without wasting a second, it exploded into action, launching itself off the carcass with a ferocious snarl, charging straight at the hyena! The message was unmistakable, and the hyena didn’t argue.

It fled instantly, sending the rest of the clan scattering backward in unison. Just seconds later, the lion returned to the carcass, resuming its meal as if nothing happened.
The entire exchange lasted mere moments, yet it perfectly captured the thin line hyenas walk when dealing with lions.
Why do Hyenas Keep Coming Back?
Despite the apparent failure of this attempt, the outcome was hardly surprising, and it certainly won’t deter the hyenas for long. Interactions like this are incredibly common across Africa’s savannas, particularly in predator-rich areas like Sabi Sands, where lions and hyenas frequently overlap.

Hyenas are not reckless; they are opportunists. A lone lion, an exhausted pride, or the arrival of darkness could quickly tilt the odds in their favour.

In many cases, hyenas successfully steal kills from lions, especially when they outnumber them or harass them relentlessly over time. Conversely, lions are equally capable of killing hyenas when the balance shifts the other way.
This ever-present rivalry is not about hatred, but simply about survival.
Two Predators, One Prize
Lions and hyenas compete for the same resources: space, prey, and carcasses, making their relationship one of Africa’s most intense and fascinating rivalries. Lions rely on power and cooperation to secure kills, while hyenas lean on endurance, intelligence, and sheer persistence.
Each species has evolved strategies to exploit the other’s weaknesses, resulting in confrontations that are routine but dramatic nonetheless.

In this case, the lions seemed to hold the advantage as they were already feeding, well-positioned, and alert. The hyenas recognized this quickly once challenged and chose retreat over injury.
It was a smart decision for animals that prioritize long-term survival over short-term rewards.
The Rhythm of the Wild
As Deon’s footage shows, the bush doesn’t always deliver chaos or bloodshed. Sometimes, the most telling moments are quiet lessons in dominance and restraint.

The hyenas didn’t win the carcass this time, but they gathered valuable information, and they’ll likely be back when conditions change. This sighting is a reminder that in the wild, every encounter is a negotiation, and no outcome is ever final.
