A Leopard Hidden in Plain Sight
Safari-goer Miguele Vosloo was out near Berg-en-Dal rest camp when the group’s attention was drawn to a patch of grass just off the gravel road. At first, there was nothing to see.
The leopard was so well camouflaged that it took a few minutes of careful scanning before anyone in the vehicle could make her out, tucked low behind a small grass bush roughly five metres from the road.
She lay completely still, blending into the tawny grass around her, patient and unmoving. It’s the kind of sighting that reminds guests just how easily these cats disappear in plain sight, and just how much patience it takes to spot one before it wants to be seen.
The Ambush
About five minutes after the leopard was first spotted, an impala buck came bounding into the area, seemingly unaware of the danger waiting nearby. The leopard didn’t hesitate.
She sprang from behind the bush and locked onto the impala’s neck in a single explosive movement. The moment caught everyone in the vehicle off guard, drawing gasps as the ambush unfolded right in front of them.
The impala fought hard, thrashing and bucking wildly in a desperate attempt to throw the leopard off, but she held firm.
A Battle of Strength and Endurance
What followed was a tense struggle between predator and prey. The impala’s survival instincts kicked into overdrive as it tried every trick to break free, twisting its body and kicking out with its powerful legs, but the leopard’s grip never loosened.
Eventually, the impala’s energy began to fade. With the leopard’s jaws still clamped around its neck, she was able to force it to the ground, using her weight and control to keep it pinned.
From there, it was only a matter of time before the hunt reached its conclusion, the leopard finishing what she had started with practiced efficiency.
