After surviving a brutal battle, the lion sought comfort with his pride. However, they weren’t that happy to see him.
Rikard Ryden submitted this sad footage to Latest Sightings. He filmed it while on safari in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve.
A sorry sight
Rikard’s video begins with a sight that nobody wants to see. A male lion limps across the grasslands of East Africa.

On his hind leg, we see several deep gashes, and his general condition looks poor. Subsequently, we hear bystanders speculating that the injuries were caused by an encounter with buffalo.
Coalition member
However, as Rikard explained, he was later told that the lion was involved in a fight with other male lions. This often happens in territorial disputes, and he is lucky to have survived.

Known as Sikio, this lion is part of a notorious Mara coalition, known as the Four Musketeers. However, on this day, his allies are nowhere to be seen, but he has picked up another familiar scent.

The pride at rest
Subsequently, Rikard’s video cuts to a new scene, showing one of his pride’s lionesses snarling in his direction.

Behind her, several small cubs are playing on a fallen tree. Although she is probably familiar with Sikio, she is obviously not all that happy to see him.
Reason to be wary
Ignorant of the potential threat, the cubs continue with their games. Meanwhile, the lioness continues to snarl at Sikio as he gets ever closer.

Despite recognising the approaching male, she has good reason to be wary. Male lions are the leading cause of death amongst lion cubs, and are especially unpredictable when injured.
Possible death sentence
Nevertheless, as Sikio continues to approach, it is evident that the cubs are the last thing on his mind. He is limping badly and just wants to find a place to rest his aching body.

Injuries like this can mean a death sentence for predators. Simply put, if they are not mobile, they will struggle to hunt or keep up with the rest of the pride.

Reprieve
After a long struggle, Sikio eventually reaches the shade where he can lie down. Thankfully, according to Rikard, we can report that he went on to make a full recovery.

Ironically, though, some time later, he received a serious head injury battling a buffalo. Although veterinarians assisted, he later died of related complications.
The legend continues
Consequently, the closing scene of Rikard’s video is especially poignant. In the care of their mother, the cubs likely carry Sikio’s genes.

As such, the legacy of Sikio and the other Musketeers is carried into future generations on the vast plains of East Africa.
